Okla, this reminds me of something. Back when i worked for my father, our business related mostly to new homes and real estate. It always amazed me that with Oklahoma sitting right in the heart of tornado alley, that you never, ever, ever see new homes these days built with any sort of storm/tornado shelters. I would think living in this part of the country, it would be a no-brainer to work a shelter into a budget for building a new home.
Billy, my brother-in-law lives outside of Harrah and is now 82. He had an underground shelter installed in the late 80"s but neither he nor his wife have been able to get in or out of the shelter for almost 10 years now. He had a stroke that left him unable to walk without a cane and his wife has problems as well. So this is why I decided to get an above ground after first contracting for an in the garage floor model. My brother has put the same garage floor model in his new house about four years ago and now his wife is having issues getting in and out. He lives in Edmond and has spent a lot of time in the shelter. Like I said, my wife is having a hip replacement on April 7 and is now walking with a walker. Wednesday night she could just walk into our shelter easily, so we made the right choice for our situation. Age alters many of our decisions. And, I agree that more people should install a shelter when building or even buying a new home. Considering the low interest rates for homes now, the additional expense is basically only a few dollars more per month and the interest becomes tax deductible if it is financed in the mortgage.
