I was on a very long haul flight yesterday getting back to the good ole US of A. I was watching a documentary on Mongolia on the flight. Two Mongolian guys were being interviewed about their nomadic life styles. One had on a green Nike Air Jordan hat and the other had a red OU Sooners hat.

When I've encountered people afar wearing OU gear, I've pretty much learned to wait for them to say something to me first. I used to ask questions like, "Do you follow the Sooners?" or "Are you a Sooner fan?" only to get a response such as, "No, my wife bought this cap for me".

One time, a Cortez Kennedy-looking guy was walking towards me in the concourse at the St. Louis airport. He was wearing an OU cap and I just knew this guy loved the Sooners. I got face to face in passing and said (not yelled) "Boomer!". The guy looked pissed off at me. Gave me the old WTF? look. That's when I knew it was time to keep to myself from now on.

Kinda off on a tangent here, I also used to speak to people wearing other college gear. One time I was in Alamogordo, NM at a convenience store. These two guys were wearing Texas Tech stuff. I said to one of them, "Wow. You guys hired one a heck of a Basketball coach. I bet you're excited." I could tell by the confused response that he was clueless about who I was talking about. Bobby Knight had been hired the week before.

Whenever I come across someone in OU gear, I always ask, "Are you a Sooner fan or is that hat/shirt a souvenir?" Their response dictates if the conversation continues from there.

I've had similar encounter. A few years I dashed to the ramp to catch a train at Cergy-Pointoise (northwest Paris). There was a very large and fit looking black guy (LB size) wearing a silky shinny type Oklahoma Sooners jacket catching the same train. I said "Boomer Sooner" and immediately knew he was French, not American. He explained (in French) that he knew Oklahoma was a state in the US but admitted he didn't know what a "Sooner" was. He liked the color of the jacket. I met an Aussie in Perth with an OU shirt.....he was an OU grad.

I went to the UCLA-BYU game with my friend a week ago and my friend wore his Sooners jersey.
At any rate, lo and behold of all people that spot him and say something... it's Jay Norvell's brother. He was a loud, talkative guy. Looks EXACTLY like Jay except shorter and thicker/more muscular. Chatted with us for about 10 minutes as we circled the Rose Bowl on our way to our seats.
