With six QB's on the spring roster, and obviously Rattler leading the pack, I just wondered what everyone else's thoughts were on the others.....Doty, Gauthier, Davis, Helfrich, and Lee. Will Doty be a suitable backup for Rattler? Will Gauthier and Davis make a run at it as backup? To be honest I don't know much about Davis, Helfrich, or Lee. Thoughts?

Aside from Rattler, QB is a toss-up. I assume Doty gets the nod due to his time here, but he wouldn't start any other SEC program (save Vandy). Maybe Gauthier will distinguish himself.

That's disappointing. He's not living up to his buildup. We've had several QBs we went gaga over but they didn't pan out.
This staff knows what they are doing so hopefully those days are behind us.

After SS's last coupla years and he who shall not be named's mismanagement, we are doing well to stay above Vandy. GC fans, long suffering for most of the time, still hang in there and hope.

Shane train!

It will be tough for any backup due to lack of playing time if Rattler delivers as advertised. You have to get on the field to get better.

Does anyone know anything about Helfrich or Lee other than what's on their bios on the roster? I know Davis is a true freshman that enrolled early, so there won't be much on him other than HS footage and numbers.

Don't know much about them. They are both walk-ons, so slim chance they will end being contributors.

Doty probably will be next man up based on experience. I want to keep thinking we haven't seen the best of what he has to offer. Wishful, I guess.

Yeah, I have to think by now that Doty would have shown it if he was starting SEC QB material. That said, he didn't get much help from his first coaching staff here so maybe his development just got all screwed up.

Braden Davis is the QB who intrigues me most from the perspective of potential.

It has been a very bleak few years of QB play for us. We had solid Jake Bentley for a few years, but he never seemed to quite take that next step in his development...he always seemed to be right on the cusp of becoming a top tier QB in the league. I was high on Hilinski, but he just didn't pan out. Then we had the forgettable but unforgettable Collin Hill fiasco/travesty. Then last year's utter debacle, rotating between 3 guys who wouldn't make a backup QB at any other SEC program (typical Vandy exclusion here).

We desperately need some good QB vibes this season.

Tanner Bailey makes seven QB’s on the roster for next season. He was a late sign who decommited from Oregon. Not sure why he is not listed on the roster yet, maybe because he hasn’t reported.

Right! I had forgot about him. He's the kid from Alabama that I saw some guys on Twitter raving about.

I too, am interested in Braden Davis. His height and speed would be a breath of fresh air compared to what we have seen (other than Joyner) in recent years. I feel like dual threat QB's are the trend with the way this game has progressed, guys are more developed and athletic by the time they reach this level than they were 15-20 years ago.

Speaking of Joyner, that is one guy that I am SUPER proud of as a Gamecock. He has had opportunity after opportunity to get mad, pack up and leave, and find another school that would make him their centerpiece, but he has stuck in there and, in my opinion, become the heart of that team and what it means to be an awesome teammate.

Our recent track record with dual threat guys is pretty lousy. Hopefully Davis can break that trend.

I also had forgotten about Bailey. He had a good offer list.

Banking on one of these guys panning out.

Well hopefully someone steps up and makes a splash, because if Rattler goes down, even if for a limited time...

Hoping Bailey or Davis emerge as our future at the position, but they won't be ready this year. For this season it's Rattler or bust. Unless Gauthier is really good, I'm not sure who we have on the roster to make a difference at the position.

There were some on here recently arguing heavily for Joyner. Is he not even an option at qb this year?

If anyone besides Rattler takes significant snaps at QB this season, it means things have not gone well.

I'm sure coaches will have packages for Joyner, but he's not an SEC-caliber starting QB. Our coaches game-planned and schemed perfectly for UNC and caught them off-guard with Joyner, but that won't happen week-in and week-out in conference play.

I agree that I don't think Joyner will see much time as a back up QB, but you almost HAVE to have a few plays working him into like a wildcat package or something. He has too much talent to leave him as a WR all the time.

I see Doty in a lot better light that most do. His first year he obviously wasn’t ready.
Last year he was a running qb that wasn’t able to run.
he has a strong arm but has to work on touch passes and I think he was getting better.
I think he could still surprise some people. Imo a lot of hs running qb’s only look at 1 or 2 receivers then take off if it’s not there. I think it takes time for them to adjust to reading a defense.
His first game last year was at Georgia. Not a good place to get comfortable.

Thinking the same about Doty. A healthy Doty can cause headaches for defenders

Two you left off.......Tanner Bailey, who many think may be the most talented of all the QB's after Rattler and, Jalen Daniels, the west coast transfer with the big arm who trained alongside Rattler the last couple of years.

Isn't Daniels a walk-on?

I wouldn’t say so. He’s got heart, had a memorable bowl game. But if we trot him out every week, we are in serious trouble

I mean considering he had a broken foot last season and the season before that he worked more at Wideout than QB when he became the starter makes me feel positive that he will be a good QB if he continues to develop.

Different OC....everything changes.
I expect a lot of transfers from this group.

I think Doty can still a decent SEC QB....I think injuries and poor coaching have prevented us from seeing the best from him.

I’m interested to see what this Tanner Bailey kid has, heavily recruited by some big time programs as a recruit and apparently has a great arm. If I’m not mistaken, he was on the depth chart for backup QB role a few games last year. Must be impressing the coaches enough to get that spot compared to the others.

Doty looked much quicker / faster in the limited times he played last season. I think his effectiveness is tied to his health, especially his legs. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Doty turn into a solid QB before he leaves. Saw some of that with Dak. He looked like he didn’t belong at this level, yet its clear experience helped him a ton. I think the same is going to happen for Doty and the guy is a winner. Hopeful.

Without some real game time experience, no matter who #2 is they will not be ready should we need them to save the day!
Hopefully, Loggains will make it a point of emphasis to have a game ready #2 QB.

As some said though, this is a product of how often we can have commanding leads in games.
