Someone today told me that Penn State is a “great school”.

I wore a PSU jacket to the office today. A colleague, after the requisite “Go f*ck yourself” (😞), said “Penn State! My son goes there. Great school!”

He needs to spend five minutes here so we can set him straight. For f*ck’s sake.

How often do you run into morons who tell you that Penn State is a great school? For me, it’s rare. 😞

There is one place where Penn State and JoePa are remembered vividly and respected -- Bama. Everyone outside and then inside the AD know just how good Penn State competed - comments have been 'good school'.

Just thought of another place -conversations with Notre Dame alumni.

I was using sarcasm. This isn’t another thread about Joe. I get comments all the time about Penn State being a great school by coworkers, etc when they find out I went to PSU. Seems the biggest group of naysayers is, unfortunately, from within our own community.

Oy.

You might want to keep the fact that you're a PSU grad to yourself.

Why would that be. When I thought it, did I think your or you are. Thanks for living in my head. Thanks for the 2 cents of input. That is usually all that you have to offer.

I live in a nearby state and by and large people hold Penn State in high regards. It's easily one of the most popular out of state schools to apply to (and attend) - probably because if you want a big school spirit large school with football in the Northeast, PSU is pretty much the main choice. but also because people say that engineering or business or meteorology or whatever is great at PSU plus the value of a large alumni network. And you get a lot of "the campus is safe" compared to more urban colleges.

The biggest complaint is the cost for out of state, but people say that about every school.

I have literally never heard anyone in real life suggest that PSU is somehow suffering academically or or a bad place to go to school. Sometimes people say it is too big or too expensive but not that it would be a bad choice in principle.

I have had many tell me Penn State is a great school. Run into many alums stating it was the best times of their lives when they attended and have many life long friends from PSU. There are some great colleges within the university that set kids up for success. However, it is up to the kids to take advantage of that. As much as we shiite talk PSU, with the large alumni network and the some of the better colleges(Smeal, IST, Engineering, Communications, and Ag), I do think it is a good school and some of the profs I know try to keep teaching/lectures current to business today (Sorry, thinking about the prof in Back to School trying to teach business and Thornton Mellon describing what goes on in the real world).

Reading the positive comments about PSU, one might consider us the lunatic fringe. 🤔

I think schreyer is great and their career fair is great. Remember, tell your kids they can discover themselves when they get home from the office.

When i first arrived in Texas years ago several people commented to me :you must be really smart" when i mentioned I went to Penn State. It was a while until I realized they had it confused with U Penn
Same thing upon my arrival in SoCal back in the early 80’s. Many thought it was Ivy League (Penn), or just believed it was a great school, which it was for Engineering & Business back then.

I know a lot of engineers and they’re doing great . Old head mentality to think it’s no longer a good program .

Back in the mid-80s when I was graduating HS, PSU main campus acceptance rates were very selective. I recall being at the level of UC Berkeley. No idea what it's like now (spent most of my adult life in WA state) but back then it was a pretty big deal to get into main if you weren't a legacy.

Oh... and the Penn thing was real. I got that all the time living in Seattle from folks that grew-up on the west coast. I eventually just stopped correcting people. I don't feel so bad now knowing that a certain politician who's VERY proud of his Wharton degree actually transferred into the school after a family member got him an interview.
