Penn State football: James Franklin discusses running game's lack of explosive punch
Penn State Nittany Lions football has missed out on explosive plays in the running game throughout the 2021 season.
if you can win your one on one matchups enough to get 3 or 4 yards, chances are, you'll crack a few explosive runs a game. Franklin has this thing so backwards that I am beginning to think he is a total moron. The entire ethos of this team moving forward should be "win your matchup, get 3 yards," then we can start to hope for big runs and it will open back up the deep passing game. None of this is at all possible if your offensive line sucks. We don’t need EXPLOSIVE. PLAYS.in the running game. How about 3-4 yards consistently? That would make a huge difference.

I think he really wants 40 yard runs and thinks they can coach them before those runs are mere 3 and 4 yard runs. Why the hell else would he be talking about explosive runs considering his team cant pick up 2 yards.Maybe I’m misinterpreting Franklin here. Is he really looking to go from the lack of a running game to Saquon-like taking it to the house? I hope not because that doesn’t seem to be realistic.
Just 3-4 yards consistently would be nice. 2nd and 6 and 3rd and 3 regularly would obviously be much better than the usual 2nd and 9 and 3rd and 7.
The biggest drawback regarding Franklins 40 yard run theory is that someone usually has to run the first 2 or 3 yards beyond the line cleanly without being tackled. Other than that obstacle, I’m all in on long exciting runs.
Bravo, with only the use of an emoji. You have once again proven your ability to singularly display a diminutive, linguistic, expressive opinion that satisfactorily displays the contemporary opinion of a majority of posters regarding our 0line play and offensive football philosophy.
i didnt think it was possible, but franklin just convinced me he is even dumber than i thought earlier today. idiot. he thinks he's going to coach explosive run plays, specifically coach those? forget about run game being used to run down a clock and spell your defense. don't you first have to get the, you know, 2, 3 , 4 yards first. that we are too weak and poorly coached to get ever. omg he's a complete lunatic. please please please can we start calling usc and tell them how great franklin is and how they should take him but we'd never want them to. get this idiot out of here.![]()

If you think Franklin hasn’t been trying to fix the run game, you haven’t been paying attention it is obvious that they have placed more emphasis on running the ball the past several weeks, admittedly with not much success but I don’t think it’s fair to say he doesn’t recognize the problem and isn’t trying to fix it. You are correct that the OL is lousy at run blocking and it appears that none of the linemen ever pushes anyone backwards. Some have suggested that playing other players might help and maybe so. However, none of us are at practice and don’t know whether the other players are any better. I also think the RBs deserve some blame as well. I can’t thank of a single running play this season where any back burst through admittedly small holes which is something I see other backs on other teams do routinely every week. They all look like they are running in mud. Hopefully, Singleton and the RB from Florida can remedy that next year. I actually think the focus on trying to run the ball and overall conservative play calling instead of throwing against a defense begging to be passed on cost PSU the Illinois game FWIW.It’s like he doesn’t want to do the hard work on fundamentals and putting together a solid run game. Just get him 2 or 3 ‘explosive’ plays in a game and he’ll be happy. It’s like bragging you hit 3 solo home runs…… but you still lost 7-3……. to the Pirates.
He’s been talking of improving the run game since Wisconsin in week 1. There are now only 2 games left in the 6-4 season. Time to stop talking about it week after week and actually fix it (or at least show significant improvement).
Agree, if your backs are never getting clean to the second level, you ain’t busting a long gainer .The biggest drawback regarding Franklins 40 yard run theory is that someone usually has to run the first 2 or 3 yards beyond the line cleanly without being tackled. I certainly agree in principle with respect to being tough and winning one-on-one matchups...as long as they know the assignments enough to know which one-on-one matchup each is supposed to win...if you can win your one on one matchups enough to get 3 or 4 yards, chances are, you'll crack a few explosive runs a game.
