Tomlin did a great job turning the Steelers around this season and so did James with our Rose Bowl win .Anyone hating either or both of these coaches needs to forget about it ! Neither Harbaugh who chokes every big game or Day could have done a better job.

Mixed bag on Tomlin. Last 10 Steelers played four teams with a winning record and they were 1-3. Beat teams with barely a pulse. 6-0 against teams with a losing record. The team is poorly constructed and needs to have a great draft this spring to make any progress. Tomlin has 3 playoff wins in 11 years. Not the standard in Pgh.

Agree on the schedule and note that Devin Bush only played 8 defensive snaps yesterday. I'm happy that cancer will be gone.

On another note, Connor Heyward and Jaylen Warren were great pick ups as Heyward was a 6th rounder and Warren was an undrafted FA. I don't think the team is poorly constructed. They're a few players away from being very good.

Tomlin pulled it out but missed the playoffs which they made last year. Turning it around from terrible start is on him for the whole body of work for the season. He beat lousy teams and lost to lousy teams so at least he didn’t have a losing record.

franklin exceeded expectations. Clifford didn’t get hurt this year. A Healthy Clifford is a good quarterback.
Diaz defense came around which is on franklin since he hired him as well as recruited some really great players.
So all the props to franklin for hiring great coaches, recruiting great players, sticking with Clifford, oh and dare I say, keeping his hand off of the timeout button this year!!

I have a buddy who claims to be a Penn State fan.
He tells me Fickel will bring Wiscy to the top
and that he’d take 5 coaches in the west before Franklin.
Game day decisions and nothing more than a cheerleader - like Fleck he says.
I challenge him to give me 5 situations from this year’s 13 games where he feels Franklin made a horrible in-game decision.
Tells me he doesn’t watch many CFB games anymore and only saw a few of the Nits.
I believe these are the types of complainers you get - many who have not watched many of the games and teams they ***** about.
My $0.02.

Talking about Tomlin he really hit the schedular jackpot next year. His out of conference schedule includes 8 teams with a losing record this season and only 3 teams with a winning record. They only play 1 out of conference game against an elite team: the 49ers.

I agree. The NFL is a quarterback driven league and the Steelers don't have a good quarterback.

So give him credit for the second Half and a pass on the first half? Got it. Makes sense to me!

While UM never should have lost the playoff game against TCU, he did beat us and OSU two years in a row and won two straight B1G championship games with two playoff appearances. We had a great year and James did an amazing job but I’m not sure your Day and Harbaugh take holds much water.

Oh, I don’t know. One coach finished 3rd in his division, the other completed a non-playoff season to ensure a 6th straight season without a playoff win.
I get there are two ways to look at both seasons, but it’s hardly a put their doubters in the place type situation for either coach.

Counterpoint on your first point: That same guy will probably have his team finish better than 62 of the other teams that are eligible to be placed in a ranked order. Puts him in roughly the top 10%.

Projected as high as 5 next year and finished 7 this year.
PSU's 4th top ten finish in 7 years
3 NY6 bowl victories in the past 6 years
#8 in wins the past 7 years

Of course there are at least 5 coaches in the Big 10 west and dozens who just hang out here who are better than James Franklin. We Deserve Better!

Yeah, I’m not disappointed in either season, just not sure it’s the “haters eat crow” outcome suggested in the thread.

I think the Franklin haters should at least this season eat crow. No one, not even the most ardent Franklin supporter like me, could be happy with 2020 and 2021. While I would characterize my state of mind as "concerned," some took Franklin hate to the extreme. Fine. But, if one is fair minded, you look at this season, not only the record.....but the way PSU dominated the final 5 contests.....add in the player development, youth and depth...... and I think reasonable fans (even those who find reasons to dislike the coach) need to admit things went much better than expected. Perhaps even some cautious optimism for the future.

Does Michigan fall in the preseason rankings when Harbaugh leaves for the NFL or do they move up in rankings when he quits on the team?

I think there is some argument for being in the top 15-20 in preseason predictions. That argument could be that it fast tracks you to the top 5 when you start the season and win. Beyond that, there is no value to preseason rankings. It's purely media pablum for fanboys.

That is a very reasoned and reasonable take on the current state.

On to Blue-White and 2023.

Wish you’d told me to keep my optimism cautious sooner, it’s pretty unbridled right now. QB is obviously a bit unknown at this point but we do know the talent there is immense. WR also has something to prove. Other than that, this team is going to be above average to great at every position next year IMO.

I'm certainly in a better place than I was (as a PSU fan) after last season. I played and coached in an era where you were encouraged to be understated. I believe the technique was called poor mouthing. My standard comment to the local paper was "we hope to be competitive this season."

I feel the need to be cautious because I left the Cotton Bowl thinking that PSU Football was about to "take the next step."
Then COVID, Journey Brown, Micah opt out....Noah Cain and the fantom Indiana touchdown. PSU did make the next step.....right onto a banana peel.

So, I'm enjoying everything about a 11-2 season and reading about all the young talent returning and the veteran players returning for one more shot and eschewing the NFL.
In 72 years I've learned not to count those chickens before they are hatched.

Why would they eat crow? Even you expressed concern after 2 sub par seasons. He was under performing. So glad he had a great year.

I agree. The NFL is a quarterback driven league and the Steelers don't have a good quarterback.
Plus Pickett is older than Tua,, Mac Jones, and Justin Herbert and only a year or two behind Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrows. You think he is going to beat these guys in the playoffs in the next ten years?
