Alabama is in good hands when it comes to their starting quarterback this season. Bryce Young is fresh off leading the Crimson Tide to a national championship and winning the Heisman Trophy.

Even so, there is some excitement about the two guys behind him, Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson. Neither will likely see significant playing time this year but most likely compete with one another for the job next season.

Since Young is more settled into his role this year, he has had the opportunity to spend more time with the other two quarterbacks. He talked about the progress both have been making on and off the field, beginning with Milroe. Young likes what Milroe has been doing in the meeting room, saying he’s taken “that jump” since last season.

“I’ve seen a lot of progress from both of them,” Young said. “(Jalen Milroe) has taken a huge jump. You can tell how much more comfortable he is back there. In the meeting room, he’s confident. He knows what’s going on, he knows where to go with slide protections, knows what the defense is doing.

“He’s doing a great job and he’s had a little bit more time in the offense but it’s always encouraging to see another quarterback take that jump. He’s commanding the offense on the field and I’m super confident in him, super excited for him.

Milroe arrived on campus as a dual-threat quarterback and has been working on refining his game. Young is enjoying the progress the Texan has made over the past two years as he fights for that backup spot.

Ty Simpson impressing early in Alabama career

Simpson was ranked a five-star on the On3 Consensus, meaning there was always going to be some attraction to his name. Now that he’s actually in Tuscaloosa, the youngster is already picking things up quickly. Young says Simpson is constantly asking questions, citing how well the youngster is picking up protections from the Alabama defense.

“Ty as well has done a great job,” said Young. “Obviously, it’s a little newer. Things are moving probably a little faster but you wouldn’t be able to tell by how he handles it. He’s doing a really good job with protection as well which is definitely not easy. Against our defense, you see a lot of exotic looks, lot of tough stuff during camp. You see everything. So for him to be able to be doing a good job picking that stuff up — again, learning a lot in the meeting room. He asks a ton of questions. He’s always asking me, he’s always asking (Bill O’Brien).

Simpson is going through his second round of practices, being an early enrollee. There is unlimited potential and learning from Young will only help his progress move along swiftly.

Bryce Young hoping to “impact” quarterback room

Reality is, Young only has one more season left in the Alabama quarterback room. He said during fall camp, he has been trying to pass off as much as he has learned to both Milroe and Simpson. Whether it’s been from O’Brien or previous quarterbacks, Young has loved working with everyone in Tuscaloosa.

“Both of those guys, I am close with,” said Young. “I try to do everything I can to impart what I have learned. Whether it be from (Bill O’Brien), from the rest of the QB room, from experience. Just trying to talk to those guys and give them as much game as I can. They’ve been super receptive. Just the relationship we have, I love this quarterback room. The staff, the players, everything. So, I’m super excited.”
