Alabama on the road in way-too-early 2024 CFP field

Kalen DeBoer saw some coaching turnover on Monday, with linebackers coach William Inge moving across the Third Saturday in October rivalry to Tennessee. Alabama wasted no time in finding somebody to replace Inge, reportedly turning to someone with SEC experience.

According to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, Alabama will hire Christian Robinson as the program’s next linebackers coach. Feldman reports multiple SEC schools have gone after him in recent times but the Crimson Tide got him to make the jump from Baylor.

“SOURCE: Alabama is hiring Christian Robinson as its LBs coach,” Feldman said. “Robinson is a name multiple SEC programs pursued recently. Alabama lands the former Baylor LBs coach who played LB at Georgia and has coached at Florida, Ole Miss and Auburn previously.”

In what has been quite a few coaching crossovers between Alabama and Auburn, Robinson is just the latest. He was on the Plains for just one season in what was a brief spell under Bryan Harsin. He stayed on staff while Carnell Williams was the interim but was not retained by Hugh Freeze.

Robinson decided to make a move outside of the SEC just before the calendar flipped to 2023 to work with Dave Aranda at Baylor. He was the Bears’ inside linebacker coach for one season.

Before those two jobs, Florida was home for four seasons. All three programs employed him as a linebackers coach and now, the same will be true at Alabama.

A lot of questions were asked about DeBoer having SEC experience on his staff after most of his career was spent out West. Somebody like Robinson only strengthens the ties, mainly on the defensive end.

Christian Robinson expected to coach outside linebackers

On Monday morning, Alabama officially announced Kane Wommack as the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach. This leaves Robinson with coaching outside linebackers moving forward, a position the Crimson Tide will be replacing a ton of production from.

Dallas Turner and Chris Braswell were Alabama’s two main guys on the outside in 2023. Both are now moving on to the next level and the 2024 NFL Draft. Replacing both in the same offseason would be a difficult challenge for anyone but a new position coach only adds to the process.

Robinson will have plenty of talent to work with but not have a good amount of experience. Outside linebacker has been a proud position in Tuscaloosa throughout the years and everyone will be hoping it continues moving forward.
