According to Ryan Phillips of the Tuscaloosa Patch, incoming Alabama transfer Jaykwon Walton was arrested on Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. Walton was found by police in a vehicle with marijuana and “multiple” firearms.

“JUST IN: Alabama men’s basketball transfer Jaykwon Walton was arrested Saturday night after Tuscaloosa Police found him and two others in a vehicle on Reed Street with marijuana and multiple guns,” Phillips said via Twitter.

Walton has been charged with second-degree possession of marijuana. He has since been released after posting $500 bond. In the state of Alabama, the charge is punishable with up to a year of jail and a fine of up to $6,000.

Tuscaloosa Police Department spokeswoman Stephanie Taylor spoke with the Tuscaloosa Patch on the incident, saying there were multiple complaints about vehicles in the surrounding area. When police officers arrived on the scene, they approaches a vehicle just past 10 p.m. with Walton located inside of it.

“The officers smelled marijuana and asked the three men to exit the car,” Taylor said via the Tuscaloosa Patch. “Front seat passenger Jaykwon Walton, 21, of Pike Road in Montgomery County, informed an officer of a loaded firearm under his seat. While retrieving the firearm, the officer noticed a rolling tray, a baggie containing approximately 20 grams of marijuana and a half-rolled blunt in the passenger side floorboard.”

Just over a month ago, Walton announced his intentions to play for the Crimson Tide for the 2023-2024 season out of the NCAA transfer portal. He was previously with Wichita State after beginning his career with the Georgia Bulldogs. Walton was originally a four-star prospect coming out of Carver-Montgomery (AL) High School.

In 28 games with the Shockers last season, Walton averaged 13.9 points and 5.3 assists per game. He excelled from the three-point line, shooting 40% from behind the arc. Considering the style of play Alabama plays with, the fit seemed to be a good one.

At the time of posting, head coach Nate Oats has not commented on Walton’s arrest. Whether or not the player will still have a spot on the team following the incident is unknown.

Jaykwon Walton latest Alabama basketball player arrested

Unfortunately for Alabama, having a basketball player arrested is nothing new. It’s another gun case inside of the program, albeit — one that is less serious.

Darius Miles was arrested back in January and eventually was charged with capital murder. The case involving the now-former Alabama player is still ongoing. Oats was quick to dismiss Miles from the team once the news was announced.

Of course, star player Brandon Miller saw his name mentioned in the Miles case as a witness. He was never charged with anything and continued to play for Alabama all the way until a Sweet Sixteen loss in March. Plenty of criticism was thrown in the direction of Alabama throughout the entire process.

Oats now has another arrest to deal with before even fully moving onto the 2023-2024 season.
