Alabama head coach Nick Saban is not known for routinely cracking jokes at his press conferences with reporters. As a matter of fact, it’s quite the opposite. Still, the incredibly focused head coach has had his fair share of funny moments when he lets his guard down from time to time, whether its with his players or with the media.

That’s why Saban’s press conference with reporters on Wednesday was such a treasure. The Alabama head coach had a hilarious conversation with the Alabama beat writer for The Athletic, Aaron Suttles.

Suttles asked Saban a question about Henry To’o To’o and how he’s progressed in his role.

Saban then gave his response. Below is the exchange between the two, the transcribed version.

Nick Saban: “Well I have a question for you, first of all. I mean, [do] I finally get to meet the boss?”

Aaron Suttles: [Laughs]. I apologize. My wife is not home yet so I’m having to pull dad duty.”

Nick Saban: “This is the best behavior I’ve seen you on since I’ve been here.”

Aaron Suttles: [Laughs from other reporters in the room]. “I apologize.”

Nick Saban: “No, you don’t have to apologize. If this is the way it’s gonna be, I’d like for him to be there all the time. [Laughter in the room].

Interactions like the one above with Nick Saban and reporters are rare, which is why the moment should be cherished by Alabama fans and college football fans around the country.

Most of the time he’s stern, serious, and often sending his team messages about how he wants his team to play or handle certain things to make them better as players.

Saban shares his definition of a great competitor

Saban is widely regarded as one of the top minds college football has to offer, so when he shares how he defines a truly great competitor, it’s safe to assume he’s the right man to listen to.

“What defines great competitors is when people can be their best when their best is needed.” Saban said. “I think people are always evaluating and looking at that. That is something I am always trying to help the players try to do.”

Nick Saban continued by describing the traits vital to succeed in the toughest competitive situations.

“In terms of the intensity that you have and the focus you need in able to go out there and compete against good players in tough environments. That is as difficult of a competitive situation as you are going to be in.”

Though he wasn’t asked specifically about if his team lacked a competitive edge in the Texas A&M loss, the Crimson Tide coach reverted to Saturday’s loss when identifying the starting point for any team to be consistent.

“We made too many mental errors, we didn’t tackle well in the game and I think all that starts with your mindset,” Saban said.

The Alabama Crimson Tide suit up against the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday. Kickoff is 7:00 PM EST from Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
