Kalen DeBoer recaps first spring practice in full pads | Alabama Football

The Alabama Crimson Tide have a new young wide receiver in Caleb Odom on the team. He’s a player that a lot is expected from moving forward and recently earned high praise from new offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan.

It was during Spring practice when Sheridan praised Odom’s effort and shared that he’s rapidly improving for the Crimson Tide.

“Talented player. No doubt about it,” Nick Sheridan said. “Coach Shep [JaMarcus Shephard] is pouring into him, and he’s getting better each and every day. When you have a young skill player, the stamina, the endurance, the volume of running in practice, the effort. And the thing that I would say about Caleb is that he’s a sponge. He soaks it all in.”

Caleb Odom came to Alabama as a four-star recruit in the Class of 2024. He was the 54th-ranked player overall in his class and came to Tuscaloosa as a tight end. However, the decision was made to have him begin spring practice working at wide receiver.

That comes after Odom proved to be an excellent receiving threat from the high school position in high school. As a junior, Odom had 1,121 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns on 64 receptions.

“We’re pleased with where he’s at. He’s got work to do, there’s no doubt. He’s a young player. But we’re glad he’s on our team,” Sheridan said.

Caleb Odom is a Georgia native who was chosen to play in the Under Armour All-America Game following his senior year of high school. He chose to go to Alabama over several other offers. That, notably, included Georgia, Auburn, and Florida, among others.

Nick Sheridan on moving Caleb Odom to wide receiver

When the Alabama coaches decided to move Caleb Odom to wide receiver, Nick Sheridan shared why that decision was made.

“We’re just trying to put him in a position to be successful early on in his career. He’s a big kid. He’s very athletic. He’s very explosive. He’s got a great frame. How his body grows and what he turns into being when he’s 20, 21, 22 years old, I think time will tell,” Sheridan said.

“He certainly runs plenty good enough to play wide receiver. He runs very well. He’s a big target… He’s been great. He comes from a great program. He’s accustomed to playing football at a high level. The moment hasn’t been too big with him. He fit right in.”
