Sam Pittman says Arkansas 'certainly will be active in the portal'

The construction of rosters is completely different than it used to be thanks to the transfer portal. It’s a challenge that coaches are trying to manage. For Arkansas and Sam Pittman that much will be obvious when the transfer portal kicks off after spring ball.

During an appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show, Pittman explained that the team is going to add several players through the transfer portal.

“I don’t know when you can breathe anymore,” Sam Pittman said. “Obviously the portal opens up on the 15th. Paul, we have eight scholarships. So, we certainly will be active in the portal.”

Pittman emphasized that he wasn’t trying to knock his team. He’s happy with where they are, but the portal changes when players are added.

“And that’s not saying anything negative toward our team, but you’d rather play with 85 than 77. So, we’re certainly looking for certain positions and things of that nature.”

More than anything for Sam Pittman, there isn’t a minute to breathe for coaches. Even after spring practice, the coaching staff is going to have to do a ton of recruiting to fill those final eight roster spots with scholarship players.

“But, we’re in May, you know your coaches went out in the spring and the only thing negative was the coach might want to call a meeting on Saturday to find out who you found in the recruiting trail. Now, you’re going to have officials, you’re going to have visits, and it never stops,” Pittman said.

“For us, we’re gonna try and clean up our own team, make sure we’re okay in the portal the first week, excuse me, just the next week after the spring game. We’re gonna stay in and then we’ll be out on the road, but I certainly feel like we’ll have OVs throughout the end of April and probably all the way through May.”

Sam Pittman is still trying to identify a top wide receiver

Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman recently admitted that the Razorbacks are still trying to identify the team’s top wide receiver this offseason.

“There really hasn’t been a wideout that you go, ‘That’s the guy,’ yet. Probably the closest thing to that has been Bryce [Stephens]. We do feel comfortable with who’s out there, but you’re talking about a guy to catch for 700, 1,000 yards, something like that. I don’t know that that guy has yet identified himself,” Pittman said.

“I’m not saying that he’s not on the team, I just don’t know that we know for sure.”
