Auburn is expected to hire former Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery as the school’s offensive coordinator, On3’s Matt Zenitz reported on Sunday night. The news was first reported by Brandon Marcello. Along with being hired as the team’s offensive coordinator, Montgomery will coach Auburn’s quarterbacks. Before Tulsa, Montgomery was the offensive coordinator for the a few of the nation’s most prolific offensive attacks at Baylor during the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Under Montgomery’s watch, Tulsa’s offense exploded in 2016 and set a NCAA record. They became the first team in FBS history with a 3,000-yard passer (Dane Evans), two 1,000-yard rushers (James Flanders and D’Angelo Brewer) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Keevan Lucas and Josh Atkinson). Tulsa established 11 individual school records in 2016–including nine career records, one single-season record, and one single-game record. Tulsa finished with an overall record of 10-3 that year, including a 55-10 win over Central Michigan in the Miami Beach Bowl.

Late on Sunday night, Montgomery changed his Twitter profile picture to an Auburn helmet, confirming the news via social media.

Before becoming the head coach at Tulsa, Montgomery spent seven seasons with the Baylor Bears under their previous head coach, Art Briles. While at Baylor, Montgomery helped guide the Bears to 11 wins in his final two seasons there. In 2014, Baylor finished with an 11-1 overall record, and they were ranked as high as No. 4 in the Associated Press Poll. That season, the Bears’ offense put up 581.3 yards per game and scored 48.8 points per game–leading the nation in both categories.

Following Baylor’s record-breaking 2013 Big 12 Championship season, Montgomery was voted as the Offensive Coordinator of the Year by FootballScoop.com. He was also named as a finalist for the Broyles Award–given to the nation’s top assistant coach. Baylor also led the nation in total offense during the 2013 season (618.8 yards per game).

Auburn also named their defensive coordinator on Sunday night, former Baylor defensive coordinator Ron Roberts.
