Auburn made a major move on Friday when it announced Allen Greene is stepping down as athletic director. After the announcement, the Tigers revealed the plan to replace him.

Auburn chief operating officer Marcy Girton is going to serve as the acting athletic director until the university names an interim, according to AL.com’s Tom Green. From there, the school will go about a search for a full-time, permanent replacement for Greene, who served in the role since 2018.

The decision wasn’t completely unexpected. Greene’s in the last few months of his contract and Auburn recently brought in a new president. He said he’s leaving to pursue other opportunities, according to statements released by the Tigers Friday afternoon.

Auburn announces it has parted ways with AD Allen Greene

ESPN insider Pete Thamel first reported Auburn was in talks with Greene regarding an “imminent departure.” Greene has five months remaining on his contract and some sort of “finality” was expected Friday, Thamel said.

That came in the form of an announcement from the university, saying Greene is leaving to pursue other opportunities.

“The decision to step away from Auburn Athletics is not an easy one, but it is the right time for me to begin the next step in my professional journey,” Greene said in a statement. “I am very proud of the work that we have done together to move our athletics program forward. Christy and I want to thank the Auburn Family for allowing us to be a part of something truly unique and I wish Auburn nothing but the best in the years ahead. I’m confident we leave Auburn Athletics stronger than when we arrived.”

The next question after the announcement is what Greene’s pending departure means for Auburn head football coach Bryan Harsin. During the offseason, the university launched an inquiry into the program and questions remain about his future even after the school elected to keep him in his role.
