Auburn saw some turnover this offseason but some of the program’s most important players decided to return. One was John Samuel Shenker, who is coming back for a sixth season with the Tigers at the tight end position. Shenker was named a captain on Wednesday, proving to be a top leader.

The decision to return for Shenker was one he knew before the 2021 season even ended. Shenker reflected on the moment he told head coach Bryan Harsin he would be back at Auburn, saying it came during the bowl game against Houston. Wanting to play for Harsin and help the Tigers move forward was a huge reason why Shenker is back.

“Not at all,” Shenker said. “I remember walking on the field against Houston, I was talking to Coach Harsin. I said ‘I’m coming back and it’s not for me, it’s for Auburn.’ I believe in what he does. I think that’s the reason a lot of us came back because we believe in Coach Harsin and what he has for this program. We’re excited about it and that’s the main reason we came back is to play behind Coach Harsin.”

Shenker is one of the greatest tight ends in Auburn history already. Last season, he broke the single-season receptions (33) and yards (413) record for the position. Although he was not able to find the endzone, he was productive for the offense in 2021.

Now, with a new quarterback potentially coming into the system, Shenker will continue to be a major threat to opposing defenses. If there’s one thing you cannot question about his game, it’s the passion he has for Auburn football. Shenker being named one of three team captains only helps his case, showing he will give everything for the Tigers this season.
