Despite taking a loss over the weekend, Auburn made some noise on the recruiting trail. The Tigers took No. 1 Georgia down to the wire in front of a packed Jordan-Hare Stadium, which held a hefty amount of elite prospects that were in attendance.

Not only were multiple Auburn pledges and uncommitted recruits in the building, but so were plenty of recruits already committed elsewhere, one of whom was Picayune (Miss.) Memorial four-star EDGE and Florida commit Jamonta Waller.

The 6-foot-0.5, 240-pounder is the No. 58 overall prospect and No. 6 EDGE in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 2 player in Mississippi.

On the latest edition of The Inside Scoop, Auburn Live recruiting insider Jeffrey Lee joined On3’s Josh Newberg to dish on where the Tigers stand with Waller. Flipping the Gator pledge doesn’t appear to be out of the cards.

Auburn has connections with Waller

While it’s Florida that boasts a top-five recruiting class in the 2024 cycle — per the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Ranking — and not Auburn, the Tigers are still gaining traction with Waller. The future may be brighter on the Plains than in Gainesville, which could impact his final decision when the December signing period rolls around.

“Certainly trending up towards Auburn,” Lee said. “You’d like to believe — if you’re an Auburn fan — the trajectory of the program is up. You saw that Saturday against Georgia. You look down South and you see Florida struggling, you’ve got to think that weighs somewhat in the recruitment of these guys.

…The need on defense and Auburn’s success on defense with the guys that they have is something Jamonta’s certainly noticing.”

Defensive coordinator Ron Roberts has headed the Tigers’ recruitment of Waller, which has included an unofficial visit back in March and an official visit in May. He committed to Florida on June 19, just three days after his OV in Gainesville. Penn State was also a finalist along with Auburn.

“There’s a big connection there with Ron Roberts, there’s a big connection with there Jeremy Garrett and I think getting him back on campus — you know, he’s pretty quiet. He doesn’t do a lot of interviews, so getting him back on campus says a lot,” Lee said.

Waller has an On3 NIL Valuation of $148K. The On3 NIL Valuation is the industry’s leading index that sets high school and college athletes’ projected annual value (PAV). The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
