Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin shared awful news regarding sixth-year center Nick Brahms, indicating he would no longer play football. Brahms has battled injuries throughout his career, and underwent knee surgery twice over the offseason in preparation for fall camp. Unfortunately, according to Harsin on Monday, Brahms’ pain grew too great to allow him to practice — effectively ending his college football career.

Nick Brahms out for season

“Bryan Harsin officially announces Nick Brahms is done with football, as we told our subscribers earlier today,” explained On3’s Justin Hokanson.

Brahms will remain on the team and attend practices and games despite his injury, and will work in a player-coach capacity with the team.

The long-time center joined the Tigers in 2017 and was redshirted, and began playing for Auburn from 2018 through 2021 after winning the starting role. With an extra year of eligibility from the COVID-19 impacted season, Brahms was eligible to play for a sixth year — before injury concerns took him out of play.

“Without Brahms, junior Tate Johnson is expected to start at center. Behind Johnson, sophomore Avery Jernigan is taking repetitions. Sixth-year senior Brandon Council and senior Jalil Irvin are also options at center. Irvin was Brahms’ backup last season, including starting against Houston in the bowl game. Council has played center during his college career and adds depth, if needed,” explained Hokanson in his breakdown of the news.

Brahms’ impact on the Auburn community extends well beyond the football field, as he was nominated for the Wuerffel Trophy ahead of the 2022 season. The Wuerffel trophy is given annually to the player that has leadership achievement and community service on and off the field. This year was the second consecutive season that Brahms had been nominated for the award.
