After Saturday’s loss against Penn State, the writing is on the wall for Byran Harsin. His relationship with Auburn is not going to last too much longer. Whether the Tigers make the move or the head coach decided to leave elsewhere, it’s only a matter of time.

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic floated some names around for potential candidates, with Lane Kiffin and Hugh Freeze being mentioned. However, during Tuesday’s edition of The Paul Finebaum Show, Feldman made the case for Jackson State‘s Deion Sanders to take over at Auburn.

Part of the reasoning being — Feldman thinks Sanders would kill it as a recruiter for the Tigers. Sanders has already proven he can bring big-time recruits into his program with Jackson State. Add a brand such as Auburn to the equation and it would be dangerous for other SEC programs.

“I would be fascinated to see what Deion Sanders could do there,” Feldman said. “To me, that would be a really, really interesting addition to the SEC. He’s been a college coach and he’s done some really good things where he’s at. Obviously, it’s a different scale to coach in the SEC but I don’t think he’s going to be intimidated.

“If I was a rival recruiter — if Deion Sanders is doing the in-home visit, I would be worried because of how dynamic he is and how much of a reputation he has.”

More resources at Auburn could lead to success for Deion Sanders

The potential with Sanders goes way past recruiting, though. After doing more with less, Sanders would have the resources of a top-level SEC athletic department. Feldman says it’s something both parties could have serious interest in making happen.

“I think give him resources — because he just doesn’t have a lot of resources to work with financially around the program where he’s at,” Feldman said. “That would be a different story at Auburn. I don’t think there will be as many vacancies as last winter but we think (Auburn) will be one. And this is a very big job.

“Regionally, it’s one where I could see it making some sense to where they’d have some interest on both sides of it.”

Sanders is in the midst of his third season with Jackson State, having an 18-5 overall record. Last year was his best overall, winning 11 games and making the Celebration Bowl with the Tigers.
