A player we have not seen on the field recently for Auburn is JD Rhym. Head coach Hugh Freeze revealed the cornerback is currently working through “personal issues,” explaining his absence on Saturdays. Now, there is a decision on Rhym’s future that Freeze has to make.

“JD and I are working through some personal issues,” Freeze said during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference. “It’s week to week and I think he’s got the potential to be a really good contributor to our team. It’s just the standard that we want for all of our players is being upheld.

“We’re kind of at a point right now where you’re wondering if it’s better to redshirt him or not. That’s kind of what we’re dealing with right now. I think he’s played in three games, so we’re trying to manage that now. There’s no more issues now, it’s just what’s best for him and our team long-term.”

According to the official Auburn website, Rhym has played in four games this year. His most recent appearance was against LSU on Oct. 14, where he had a season-high three tackles. Rhym has recorded a total of six tackles and even got an interception in the season opener against Samford.

But he has played in four games. Meaning, if he were to step onto the field once more, his redshirt opportunity would be burned. The Tigers have three more games in the regular season, beginning with a road trip to Arkansas.

Freeze will have to decide if Rhym can make a big enough impact down the stretch. Otherwise, the sophomore will have an extra year of eligibility coming his way.

However, there could be a way to see Rhym play in another game if the “personal issues” get worked through. In a recent NCAA rule change, the cornerback would be allowed to play in a bowl game if Auburn reached eligibility. It would not count toward his four-game total, now only applying during the regular season.

Auburn currently has five wins, needing just one more to make a bowl game. It can be earned on Saturday against Arkansas. If not, the following game against New Mexico State is likely a safe bet.

Freeze still has time to decide what the best decision for Rhym’s long-term future is. First and foremost, making sure the personal issue gets sorted out is likely Freeze’s top priority. The focus will then shift back to football.
