Auburn Tigers offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery explained how he is selling Auburn to recruits following a practice this spring.

As Montgomery explained, there is more excitement around Auburn than there has been for some time now.

“Well, I think for them, just the excitement level that is surrounding our program right now,” Philip Montgomery said.

“We’ve got this beautiful building that’s involved, we’ve got a whole new staff, we’ve got guys who are excited about what’s happening. You see what we’re doing offensively and defensively. I think that fits in conjunction with what guys are looking for as they’re looking for a new home, and so a place where they can be developed and grow and I think this place is obviously giving them those opportunities.”

Montgomery was then asked how recruits are receiving that message. He says they’re taking it well, as recruits continue to understand Auburn better.

“Yeah, I think the recruiting side has gone really well. We’ve had a lot of guys come through, we’ve had a lot of recruits come through. I think most of those, as they walk out of this building, they’re like, ‘Wow, I was anxiously waiting to see what this was gonna look like,’ and I think the feeling they get when they’re here is they understand this is about family. This is about growth and this is about development and we’ve got a lot of guys around here trying to do that.”

Philip Montgomery came to Auburn after eight seasons as the head coach at Tulsa. There, he compiled a record of 43-53. Prior to that, he was the offensive coordinator at Baylor and Houston under Art Briles.

When he first got to Auburn, Philip Montgomery broke down the offensive philosophy that he’s bringing to the Tigers.

“We want to be an efficient scoring machine and we want to be able to create excitement. We want to be able to push the ball down the field, we want to get involved in the run game, we want to get involved in the screen game, but keeping people off balance a little bit from a defensive standpoint,” Montgomery said.

“But, we’re going to stretch the ball vertically as well as horizontally and try to make you play out in space. So, I think we’re going to give them something to stand up and cheer about.”

Hugh Freeze is happy with Philip Montgomery’s offense

As Philip Montgomery continues to install a new offense at Auburn, Hugh Freeze has taken notice and is pleased with how things are going to this point.

“I’m pleased with what we’ve put in the spring. Obviously, with it being totally new verbiage, totally new schemes to what they were used to, you know, it’s not everything. But it was enough for us to kind of figure out we have a chance to be decent at this run scheme or  this RPO scheme or this pass game. Fall camp and game planning, I think we’ll be able to get more in but I’m pleased with what we got in the spring and we’re gonna be a mixture of tempo and non-tempo and some of that is still to be determined and how much of it is based on, I think you’ve got to play complimentary football,” Freeze said.

“That is best for your whole team, not just for your side and sitting in my chair, I think I have a better understanding of that than then I once did.”
