Baylor is up early on Colgate in the NCAA Tournament, despite one of its top players being limited. Center Yves Missi has been in and out of the game early on as he is dealing with some pain.

Bears coach Scott Drew spoke with TruTV during a timeout in the first half about what Missi is dealing with.

“His back’s bothering him, but he’s a tough kid. We’ll see if he gets back,” Bryce Drew said. “If the trainer says he’s good, he’s good.”

The good news for Baylor is that Yves Missi was able to return to the game, even if he is less than 100 percent. He scored 9 points with 2 rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.

Missi is averaging 11.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game on the season, while shooting nearly 62 percent from the field.

As for the Baylor team, the Bears jumped out to a 21-8 lead and have held a double digit lead throughout most of the first half. At the break, the Bears hold a 54-34 lead.

Drew spoke with TruTV about the hot start for his team, particularly on the offensive side of the court.

“We’re making shots. We’re getting high-percentage shots, so we need to keep making them,” Drew said. “We did a good job on the glass. We need to stop [Keegan Records] he’s gotten too many easy ones.”

Records started out 4-for-4 from the field against the Bears as he tried to keep Colgate in the game.

It was an impressive first half for a Baylor team that is the No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Bears are the No. 3 seed in the West region, while Colgate is the No. 14 seed.

The winner of Baylor and Colgate will play the winner of Clemson and New Mexico in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.

Scott Drew to remain at Baylor despite being linked to other openings

Baylor‘s Scott Drew has been linked to a couple of open jobs but will reportedly not be leaving Waco.

According to Jeff Goodman of the Field of 68, Drew will return to Baylor and not accept another job this offseason. Drew has mainly been linked with Louisville, potentially making a move from the Big 12 to the ACC. Instead, he will continue to build his already great legacy with the Bears.

“BREAKING: Baylor’s Scott Drew will remain at Baylor, sources told @TheFieldOf68,” Goodman said via X. “Drew obviously had been a top target of Louisville and other schools.”

Drew was hired at Baylor in 2003 when the program was in the cellar. The Bears had made the NCAA Tournament just four times in their history and had barely even been ranked in the AP poll. Losing seasons were common in Waco.

The process took some time but Baylor is now a national brand in college basketball. Drew has been a consistent contender and even cut down the nets in 2021 after a 28-2 season. A magical run nobody at Baylor will ever forget.

Other schools were hoping Drew could bottle up the same magic and bring it to them. If anybody out there could take on a long-term rebuild and produce results, it’s Drew.
