This offseason, there was ample concern that the Baylor Bears would lose head coach Scott Drew to the Kentucky Wildcats. Instead, Drew stayed in Waco, TX, but did lose a few assistant coaches. To replace the existing coaches, the Baylor head coach brought on two former players to help him lead Baylor in 2024 — Tweety Carter and Melvin Hunt.

During a recent press conference, the Baylor head coach shared his thoughts, emotions, and a laugh while discussing how it feels to have the two former players on his coaching staff.

“The irony is you now have a lot bigger generations covered. Melvin’s going to be hit up for all his tickets from older people and Tweety from all the newer people,” said Drew.

“But the great thing is I know Melvin’s been someone involved with the program. He’s been around, had so much success in the NBA, and is somebody that everybody really respects and loves. Obviously, his daughter was a big hit with the volleyball team; (she) helped us get to a Final Four; [she] works at Highland (High School) and is so respected in the area. So I know he’s excited to be back, especially with their first grandbaby. His wife was excited about that as well.”

Drew named Carter Baylor Men’s Basketball Director of Player Development back in 2022. After spending two years in the role, he has now been promoted to assistant coach. Carter graduated, leaving Waco in 2010 after leading the program to the Elite 8 in his senior season. That year, he would average 15 points per contest and lead the Big 12 and assist, averaging 5.9 per game.

Hunt played for Baylor in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but he was most recently an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks. The former Bears star has been working in the NBA for the past 25 years, starting out as a scout for the Houston Rockets in 1999.

Drew on considering other coaching jobs: ‘I don’t want to let the Baylor family down’

Drew also took some time to address the fact that he was under consideration for other jobs elsewhere this offseason during a recent press conference last week. He began by making it clear that he did not think about any of those potential opportunities until after this past season came to an end for the Bears with a 24-11 record after the Round of 32.

“Good question,” said Drew. “During the season, I’m really focused and locked in with our team. Whatever people say or speak of, I really don’t follow that. That’s why coaches have agents nowadays. So, season ends and then you can have a conversation. During the season, it’s 100% locked in on what we’re doing and trying to accomplish.”
