Bill O’Brien is reportedly close to taking over the Boston College Eagles after Jeff Hafley left the program for the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator gig.

According to Rich Thompson of The Boston Herald, the two sides are “down to the minor details,” insinuating O’Brien is in-line to become the next leader of the Eagles. Earlier this offseason, the experienced offensive mind took the Ohio State offensive coordinator job, but it seems like there’s potential that won’t be happening.

“Heard @BCFootball and Bill O’Brien are down to the minor details. Possible @ACCFootball announcement on Wednesday. @BosHeraldSports. He won’t come cheap with a lot of incentives,” Thompson reported.

That’d a big blow for Ohio State, who’s been in a championship-or-bust mindset this offseason, but O’Brien would be a major hire for the Eagles. Some would theorize it’s even an upgrade over Hafley, and the former New England Patriots assistant will get to remain in the area.

Time will tell if it comes to fruition, or if it falls apart at the finish line. Nevertheless, Boston Colleges fans can get excited at the prospect of Bill O’Brien leading the Eagles into battle in 2024.

How Ryan Day salvages situation if Bill O’Brien takes Boston College job

Meanwhile, On3 took a crack at figuring out how Ohio State’s Ryan Day can salvage his offensive coordinator situation if Bill O’Brien does indeed take the Boston College job, like it seems to be trending.

Jesse Simonton doesn’t’ think it’ll take long to replace O’Brien should Day have the need, but the timing certainly throws a lot of things off.

“They’re not gonna have a shortage of candidates,” Simonton said. “It’s Ohio State. It’s much like Kentucky, although an even better spot obviously because it’s Ohio State, but Mark Stoops is going to be able to hire somebody good. Ryan Day is in a more unique position because he is giving up play calling and looking for someone that he trusts to kind of bridge his vision with the overall program.

“The tough part is just timing. We’re weeks away from spring practice. And it’s just the timing is ill for kind of everybody in the market for such a premier position like offensive coordinator right now.”

Alas, the Ohio State gig will be coveted, so we’ll see where Ryan Day looks, as the Buckeyes look to compete for a title in 2024.
