College Football Discussion: Jeff Hafley Leaving Boston College For the NFL a SIGN Of CFB's Future?

Boston College hiring Bill O’Brien is now official. BC announced on Friday that it has agreed to terms with the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator.

O’Brien is replacing Jeff Hafley, who left to take the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator position this offseason.

BC Director of Athletics Blake James released a statement after officially naming Bill O’Brien as the Boston College head coach.

“I am thrilled to welcome Bill O’Brien, his wife Colleen, and his sons Jack and Michael to Boston College,” James said in a statement.  “When we embarked on this search, we prioritized finding a coach who believes in our mission and vision, who has a plan for greatness on and off the field, and who will work tirelessly to elevate BC Football.”

Although Bill O’Brien was most recently the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, he did take the role of offensive coordinator with Ohio State last month. However, after the Boston College job came open, he will lead the Eagles program instead.

O’Brien is the 37th head coach in Boston College history. In addition to being a successful offensive coordinator, he has also worked as the head coach of Penn State and the Houston Texans.

“Bill is a gifted leader who has had a tremendous amount of success as a head coach and coordinator at both the collegiate and NFL levels,” James said. “His passion for teaching football and developing young men make him a great fit to lead Boston College to greater heights.”

A Boston native, O’Brien has deep ties to the area, having gone to school at Brown. That was where he got his start in coaching before later spending six years with the Patriots in his two stints.

Jeff Hafley releases statement after leaving Boston College

Following his decision to move from the Boston College Eagles to the Green Bay Packers, Jeff Hafley released a statement on the move.

“I loved my four years at Boston College,” Jeff Hafley said. “This is an exceptional place to coach given the caliber of student-athletes we recruit, the facilities, and the support from the University and BC fans. I will miss the players who gave so much of themselves these past four years, and my wife Gina and I will certainly miss the BC community and the many friends we have made here.”

Hafley initially came to Boston College after being Ohio State’s defensive coordinator. In his four seasons there, Hafley compiled a 22-26 record, winning the Military Bowl in 2023.
