Clemson shooting guard Chase Hunter is without a doubt, one of the most dynamic scorers in the ACC. The Tigers’ superstar delivered the goods when his team needed him the most on Saturday night against Florida State, and Clemson barely avoided an upset with an 82-81 victory.

With his team trailing 81-79 with 8.5 seconds left, Hunter took the rock coast-to-coast, made an acrobatic layup with 4.5 seconds left, and got fouled in the process. With the game tied at 81-81, Hunter then calmly drilled the free throw to lift the Tigers to a heart-stopping 82-81 victory. Following his 26 point, four rebound performance against the Seminoles, Hunter spoke with the broadcasters on the ACC Network.

Chase Hunter discussed his clutch play in the final seconds

He first discussed the play when he took the ball coast-to-coast for the victory in the final seconds. “Yeah, you know. Coach [Brownell] drew it up for me to just get it and go. And go to the basket. In my mind, there’s nobody stopping me from getting to the basket. That was my mindset going into that play. I wanted to win this game bad. And you know, we found a way to do it. And I’m just happy for my team,” Hunter said.

Hunter talked about the character of the Clemson team and how they’ve been able to battle through games, despite a number of players missing games with injuries, including himself. “We got a great team, you know. Coaches’ motto is ‘grit’. Whatever happens, we always stay together. Started out slow in this game. They were making shots. Making big plays. We made big plays. But with this team, it’s a special team and we’ve just got grit. Our young players are coming along. They got some confidence in those last games. It showed up in this game. We just found a way to win. That’s what championship teams do,” Hunter said.

Hunter missed the last three games due to a foot injury. He showed why he’s one of the best players in college basketball on Saturday, flashing the freon coursing through his veins in the critical moments. His clutch play kept the Clemson Tigers alone in first place in the ACC standings for the 2022-2023 season.

Clemson now sits at 18-4 overall and 10-1 in the ACC. Up next, they will face the Boston College Eagles on January 31st.
