Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Oceanside Collegiate Academy four-star offensive tackle Monroe Freeling is one of Clemson’s biggest priorities in the 2023 class.

Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney reinforced that Tuesday night by spending his evening watching Freeling’s basketball game from the sidelines. Because of NCAA rules, Swinney couldn’t have contact with Freeling, but he could talk to coaches and show his face in the crowd.

Freeling is the No. 68 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 4 offensive tackle and the No. 1 prospect in South Carolina.

The 6-foot-6, 260-pounder holds more than 20 offers, including ones from Notre Dame, Clemson, Miami, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Clemson has made a strong impression on Monroe Freeling

He visited the Tigers this fall, and he is heading to Miami this weekend for the Hurricanes’ Elite Prospect Day. Freeling had previously seen Clemson, but his trip during the season was his first time on campus during a game day. The Tigers made a major impression.

“I thought it was a really good trip,” Freeling told ClemsonSports. “I finally got to get back there and experience a game day environment. It was really cool. They have a really good culture going on. Just being in the locker room after the game and feeling how enthusiastic they were about the team and everything.”

Clemson and Notre Dame are considered the early favorites in his recruitment, but he has yet to release a list of top schools or narrow anything down from his full list of offers.

“I think they’re all pretty equal,” Freeling added, “but Clemson is definitely one of the favorites just because of them being in-state and the really good first impression they put on me. The first impressions don’t lie. I had a really good time the first time with my mom. My mom, she really loved it.”
