It’s safe to say that the hiring of head coach Deion Sanders has put a spotlight on Colorado football that hasn’t existed in some time. The former NFL star has a charisma and style to him that’s attracted many recruits and the college football landscape as a whole before he’s even coached a single game for the Buffaloes.

But is Coach Prime truly a good fit for Colorado? FOX’s Colin Cowherd asked that very question to college football analyst and former Colorado quarterback Joel Klatt on Tuesday.

“Great,” Klatt said. “Here’s the thing, Deion is a refrigerator right? He’s not the glass of milk in the room, the glass of milk is gonna turn into whatever temperature the room it’s in. Deion is going to turn every around him into his temperature. He is the sun, he is the gravity, he’s the magnet, this is what’s so great about him.”

The Buffaloes finished with a disappointing 1-11 record last season, and in the prior five seasons only achieved four or five wins. Sanders’ true test will be on the field when September starts, as all eyes will be on him to see if he can improve Colorado’s win total. But there’s no question that so far he’s won the offseason, putting Colorado on the map in a variety of different ways from recruiting to national exposure.

“They don’t have a great recruiting base, no no no, Deion is the recruiting base, this is what you don’t understand. Is he going to fit in Boulder? No no no, is Boulder going to fit with Deion? Like Deion is his own gravitational pull, which is why he’s so perfect for them,” Klatt explained. “They need this like they need air to breathe, he makes them absolutely relevant.”

If Sanders is the refrigerator of the Colorado program, then there’s no doubt that cleaned out his cupboard this offseason and stocked the fridge with a ton of new ingredients.

58 players entered the transfer portal this offseason from Colorado in an intentional effort led by Sanders to reconstruct his roster. Inversely, 48 new players have since joined Colorado as well through the transfer portal, headlined by former five-star prospect and top-ranked ATH in the 2022 class according to On3’s Industry Ranking Travis Hunter, who played under Sanders at Jackson State as well.

A new spotlight has been shined on Colorado’s program thanks to Sanders, and how they perform under this newfound pressure will continue to be one of the most intriguing stories of the upcoming season.
