Colorado State coach Jay Norvell takes shot at Deion Sanders ahead of Colorado game
Ahead of the Rocky Mountain Showdown between Colorado and Colorado State, Rams head coach Jay Norvell has stirred the pot and added some extra juice to the matchup after making comments directed at Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders.
Colorado State has had to shoot videos for ESPN ahead of their game to promote that matchup, which Norvell said has added a chip on the shoulder of his players, and in the process made a comment regarding the appearance and presentation of Coach Prime.
“We’re excited, we had to do a bunch of ESPN videos and it’s great. I loved it. But our kids came out of those videos really with a chip on their shoulder. They’re tired of all that stuff,” Norvell said on his coach’s show Wednesday. “They really are tired of it. And I sat down with ESPN today, and I don’t care if they hear it in Boulder. I told them, ‘I took my hat off, and I took my glasses off.’ And I said, ‘When I talk to grown-ups, I take my hat and my glasses off.’ That’s what my mother taught me.”
Sanders has been known for wearing his sunglasses, hat, and even a hoodie during his recent press conferences and media appearances, bringing his unique style and swagger to the table per usual.
A style that Norvell is apparently not a fan of.
“They’re not gonna like us no matter what we say or do, it doesn’t matter. Okay? So let’s go up there and play. That’s just how I feel about it,” Norvell added. “So I don’t mean to take over the show, but I’m just tired of it. I’m tired of all that stuff and I know everybody else is too. So let’s go play.”
Earlier in the week Norvell commented on his excitement and significance surrounding the matchup as it features two African-American head coaches, which Sanders responded too.
“What I hear, I haven’t met this gentleman, but I hear he’s a good man,” Sanders said. “I know he’s a great coach. He has those guys playing hard. I like that. I’m glad he said that, I like that. Unfortunately, one of the brothers got to lose. When you face another black head coach, unfortunately, and you want to see us win. I mean, that’s the thing, but besides that, it’s just tremendous getting this opportunity and allowing the nation to see that we are more than capable of doing a sufficient and a great job.”
It will definitely be interesting to see if Sanders responds to Norvell’s latest comments leading up to Saturday’s game, especially following the alleged disrespect shown by Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule ahead of Colorado’s Week 2 matchup with the Cornhuskers.
Coach Prime’s son and quarterback Shedeur Sanders called the matchup ‘personal‘ after Rhule’s disrespectful comments regarding his father and the program, which Rhule denied making following the game.
Colorado defeated Nebraska 36-14 in their matchup, and the Buffaloes are currently 22.5-point favorites over Colorado State this weekend. And whether or not Norvell’s recent comments added more fuel to the fire ahead of Saturday’s in-state showdown, he’s going to get his wish at 10:00 p.m. ET in a game airing on ESPN.
