Some in the college football world have questioned the methods of the Colorado Buffaloes’ new head coach Deion Sanders. With the abundance of changes he’s made to the coaching staff and roster, some have wondered what kind of culture is he instilling in Boulder, Co? During a recent sit-down interview with Joe Klatt, Sanders revealed his mindset on culture and what it means to him.

“When I think about culture, I think of the way of life. Like I only know how to do things one way, and that’s what every darn thing I got; with everything I got in it and to give unconditionally, “said Sanders. “To love without fault and to want what’s ever the best. That’s it for me. And we make no excuses. A bunch of like-minded men who wanna get their education, who want to play pro football, and who want to win. To me, that’s a culture. That’s what we’re building, the direction that we’re going.”

For Sanders, there is only one way for him to approach a situation, and that is with maximum effort. Anybody who plays for him will have to possess a similar mindset, especially if they want to get the most out of their time under his tutelage.

Another thing Sandeers is particularly about is the timetable in which his team will start to show who they truly are. As the interview with Klatt continued, Sanders revealed a question from one of his players on that exact topic.

“One kid asked me, ‘Coach, with all these new young men coming, how long do you think it’s going to take for us to get on one page?’ I said, ‘That’s it’s a great question, son. Did you ask your high school coach that?’ I said, ‘When you go pro, are you going to ask your pro coach that because they get draft choices every year and free agents every year.’ So it’s virtually 40 percent a new team every year; 30, maybe. They don’t do that. They only do that in college.

“So it’s not like that. We have June, July, and August to get on the same page. By the time September rolls around and we go down to Fort Worth; when I say ‘let’s,’ the rest of the team gonna say ‘go.’ We’re gonna be adamant about every darn thing that we have in-tact at that point in time.”

Whether individuals outside of the Buffaloes program like his methods or not, Sanders has a vision for how his program will be run, and he is firm in his resolve. Whether or not his method of execution will be successful or not during his current coaching tenure remains to be seen. But there is one thing for certain; Coach Prime knows how he wants his culture set up in order to cultivate players at Colorado.
