New Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has been capturing tons of headlines. Now, he wants to be clear that he models his approach after Alabama’s Nick Saban and Georgia’s Kirby Smart.

Sanders explained this on the Pat McAfee Show when he was asked about player development and getting guys like Cormani McClain and Travis Hunter to the NFL.

“That’s the same thing,” Deion Sanders said. “The only difference between me and those guys is I actually played in the NFL. This is not a shot – I love those guys – those guys are on my Mount Rushmore, they’re up here.”

“I look up to those guys, especially Coach Saban, who I’m going to shoot a commercial with in another month. I can’t wait to sit there and glean from him and get the ideas and ideologies about life and coaching from him like I do every commercial. But he is the man.”

One thing that is unique to Deion Sanders has been his approach to roster building. Colorado has seen an exodus of players leaving, with better than 50 players hitting the transfer portal this offseason. These are players who Deion Sanders has decided to cut from the program to bring in new players who he is incredibly excited about.

“We already know what we’ve got coming in. Y’all just don’t know what we have coming in. We already know what we’ve got on the way in. They probably at the airport right now. We already know what we’ve got coming in. They just don’t know,” Sanders said.

“There’s no way that I could put new furniture in this beautiful home if we don’t clean out the old furniture. And that’s not a shot. It’s great furniture, a lot of people would love it, and a lot of people are gonna love it, but that’s not what we want. That’s not what we desire.”

Deion Sanders commented on the exodus of Colorado players

For some, the exodus of players from Colorado has been shocking. However, this was always the plan for Deion Sanders and, as he explained, the team had to make this happen.

“You’ve got to be crazy to think this just happens,” said Sanders.

“It don’t just happen, you make it happen. You know what you want. I don’t pull up – I can’t stand people who pull up through a drive thru and don’t know what they want – before I get there, I know what I want. I’m not just making this stuff up as we go. We know what we want, and I don’t concede. I don’t settle. I know what I want and I know what I’m gonna get. We don’t settle.”
