Urban Meyer Gives Respect to Deion Sanders and Colorado for Battling Adversity and Finding a Way to Win

The comparisons for Shedeur Sanders have been coming in hot since his Colorado debut three weeks ago. Among them is his mentor, Tom Brady, because of how well Sanders carries himself in the pocket.

One person who won’t offer those comparisons is Shedeur’s father, Deion Sanders. He doesn’t want to compare any of his sons — whether it’s Shedeur and Shilo on the field or Deion Jr. behind the scenes — to anyone.

He wants them to be themselves.

“I don’t do that with my kids,” Deion Sanders told Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks. “They ain’t the second of nobody. They’re the first of them. We ain’t doing that. No, no we don’t do that.”

When the Buffaloes take the field on Saturdays, Coach Prime’s three sons all have the same name on the back of their jerseys. He wants them to be proud of that name and do their best to make sure everyone knows who they are.

In fact, that’s exactly what he tells them when they take their pregame walks.

“We’re Sanders,” Sanders said. “When we take that walk, we always start off, ‘Let everybody in this country watching this game know our last name before we leave here tonight.'”

When it comes to wearing their last name with pride, Sanders listed off multiple words he wants to come to mind when his sons think of what their last name means. But the last one he listed carried more weight than any of the others because it’s something Sanders has done his entire life, with two Super Bowl rings and a World Series appearance to his name.

Win.

“Success, passion, purpose, dominance, knowledge, commitment, excellence. There’s so many attributes that I could continuously name,” Sanders said. “But with all that being said, we’re winners. We’re winners.”

So far, the Sanders family has plenty to be happy about through the first three weeks of the season. Shedeur has put himself squarely into the Heisman Trophy and NFL Draft conversations with massive games. That includes a come-from-behind victory over Colorado State last week in which he engineered a 98-yard drive in the fourth quarter to tie things up and, eventually, pull off the comeback.

Shilo made his presence known in that matchup, as well. He had a pick-six early on and ranks second on the team with 19 tackles on the year. All the while, Deion has Colorado off to a 3-0 start just one year removed from a 1-11 record.

He certainly knows how to win. And he’s doing just that in Boulder, with an opportunity to get his biggest one yet this week against Oregon.
