As a coach, Deion Sanders became known for his recruiting skills while at Jackson State. It resulted in multiple victories on the trail, which helped him parlay the success with the Tigers into the head coaching job at Colorado.

Sanders opened up about what he looks for in recruits, and he said it’s not something that shows up in the box score. Instead, he spoke about how those prospects approach the recruiting process and made it clear it’s not about the players trying to sell the school on their services.

It’s about the school selling the player on what it can do for their future.

“It’s intangible,” Sanders told ESPN’s Quint Kessnich. “When we’re recruiting, most guys feel like they’re recruiting the school, to figure out if they’re going to the school. Well, we’re recruiting you to see if we want you to come to the school. That’s a process. You’ve got to get the right and like-minded guys into this wonderful university.”

All that said, though, Sanders said there are some things that aren’t negotiable. However, he didn’t get into specifics.

“Certainly, yes,” Sanders said when asked about non-negotiables.

Of course, Saturday served as a big recruiting day with multiple highly ranked prospects coming to Boulder. But Colorado still has some more new faces coming in via the transfer portal, and Sanders sounded more than excited about what they’ll bring to the table.

Recruiting’s his favorite part of the profession, after all. He also detailed part of his pitch to recruits, and it can be summed up in two words: opportunity and truth.

“They comin’,” Sanders said after the game. “They ain’t hard to find. And they’ve already came. Did you see the kids here today? This has to be one of the biggest recruiting days in the history of Colorado football, and I’m ecstatic about it. I mean, I’ve been in the office and I can’t wait to get off the field so I can get back up and get back to the recruiting.

“We’re not promising anything or giving them anything but opportunity and telling the truth. We have no gimmick and no game. We just bring straight truth and facts.”

With the spring game in the rearview mirror, Colorado will now turn its attention to the season opener against TCU. That game is set for Sept. 2 in Fort Worth.
