Heather Dinich credits Colorado upset to Deion Sanders' coaching style over transfer portal overhaul

Deion Sanders completely overhauled the Colorado roster in the span of months, but that didn’t hamper the Buffaloes in Week 1.

Through the transfer portal, Sanders gave Colorado a face-lift, and it paid off in spades on Saturday, as the Buffaloes defeated the TCU Horned Frogs in a shocking upset. Now, many of ESPN’s brightest are debating whether this could become the norm in college football.

While Mike Greenberg argued the point on Get Up, Heather Dinich doesn’t see any copycat strategies working out as well as Colorado’s, because only the Buffaloes have Deion Sanders.

“Well I will counter that slightly Greeny, with the fact that not only was this unprecedented, in terms of transfer portal turnover on that roster, but I would say, you can’t do that, Greeny, without a coach like Deion Sanders,” Dinich responded, following Greenberg’s take on Sanders changing the game. “This is a credit to his coaching ability. You don’t transform a locker room like that without having a head man who can put it all together, chemistry wise. Execution wise. All of those intangible things, and transform it on the field. Brian Kelly hasn’t done it yet. Brian Kelly at LSU has used the transfer portal. Mike Norvell at Florida State has used the transfer portal, and it’s working for him a few years down the road right now. We’re seeing the results of some of those things.

“So you watch football, all these guys names being called played at other schools, but Deion did it in a matter of months, because of who he is. So yes, you’re going to see this NFL Draft-type moving, and free agency and all kinds of things in college football moving forward, but you can’t do it without a head coach as capable as Deion Sanders.”

Alas, that won’t stop programs from coping Deion Sanders’ strategy, but it likely won’t work out as well as it has in Boulder. Time will tell if Colorado can keep it up, but morale is through the roof for Sanders and the Buffaloes at the moment.

Paul Finebaum, Heather Dinich say Colorado has ‘no chance’ to make College Football Playoff

In Week 1, Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes announced themselves with a win against TCU in Fort Worth. With that has come a ton of excitement for the potential future of the program.

That excitement has extended to ESPN, where they played a game of Fact or Fiction on Get Up. There, host Mike Greenberg asked analysts Heather Dinich and Paul Finebaum if Colorado is a potential College Football Playoff team.

“Fiction. Pump the breaks a minute, everybody,” Heather Dinich said. “But, I will say the fact we are even talking about this and asking this question shows the magnitude of what he has done.”

Finebaum agreed, though he did admit that it looks like Colorado is going to be better than most people expected them to be this season.

“Farcical really, but remember Deion was predicted to win three games and I think he’ll have that done by September,” Paul Finebaum said. “They’re a really nice program. He is owning the sport, but there is absolutely, I can’t believe I’m about to say this, Deion, there is absolutely no chance — no chance whatsoever that they’re ever in the conversation past October.”
