According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, Kent State head coach Sean Lewis will be leaving the MAC program to work with new Colorado head coach Deion Sanders. Lewis will become the offensive coordinator in Boulder, being another person involved with the Buffaloes making a jump to the Power Five level.

“Sources: Kent (State) Coach Sean Lewis is leaving for Colorado to take the offensive coordinator job,” Thamel said via Twitter.

Lewis has been a Power Five coordinator before, working with Syracuse in 2016 and 2017 as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He then left in favor of the Kent State job, spending the past five seasons as the head coach.

The best offensive output from Lewis came during the 2020 season, being the top-scoring team in the country. Kent State scored 49.8 points per game, although in just four games due to a shortened COVID-19 year.

Arguably more impressive for Lewis, though, is what he did overall with the Kent State program. Being around since the 1960s, the Golden Flashes only have four bowl appearances to their name. Two are thanks to Lewis, guiding them to the Frisco Bowl in 2019 and Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in 2021.

The Frisco Bowl is the only bowl win Kent State has under its belt and wound up being one of just 11 winning seasons in program history.

Work to be done for Colorado offense, Sean Lewis

Colorado was one of the worst offenses in Division I football, averaging just over two touchdowns a game. Four different quarterbacks took snaps for the Buffaloes, with JT Strout being the leading passer. He threw for 1,220 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions on 90 of 203 passing.

In conclusion, Colorado was the worst passing team in the Pac-12 this year.

However, things were slightly better running the ball. Colorado finished eighth in the conference, averaging just over 100 yards per game. Deion Smith ran for 393 yards and two touchdowns on 83 attempts to lead the team.

Moving forward, Lewis already knows who his starting quarterback will be, as Sanders announced his son, Shedeur Sanders, will be following him from Jackson State. The NCAA transfer portal will likely be used as well to get some quality players into the program.

A huge rebuild will be needed from Lewis and his offensive staff to get the offense back to a competent Power Five unit. And if somebody is leaving a head coaching job to become a coordinator, you know they are up for the task.
