Will Deion Sanders and Colorado DOMINATE the Big 12?

For Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, balancing the father-coach relationship with his dad, NFL legend Deion Sanders, is second nature. Shedeur has played for his father dating back to his high school days at Trinity Christian (TX).

Deion was the offensive coordinator a Trinity Christian from 2017-20 before leaving to take the head coaching job at Jackson State. After his senior season in 2021, Shedeur Sanders chose to follow his dad, committing to the Tigers despite offers from Alabama, Georgia, Florida State and others.

When Deion Sanders left Jackson State this offseason to take over at Colorado, he again brought Shedeur with him. Speaking at the Buffaloes’ media day on Friday, the younger Sanders attempted to put into words how he manages to separate the dad and coach titles so well.

“He’s been my coach my whole life so it’s normal,” the QB said. “It’s a time for seriousness and a time for play. So it’s just something that we both know. It’s hard to explain it to you.”

It helps that the two also have their own time away from the football field. Shedeur Sanders explained how that’s much needed after being around each other for the majority of the first half of the day.

“We don’t live together,” he continued. “We go to dinner sometimes, but when I leave the facility, it’s my time just to chill and be on my own time because I’m with him all day every day.”

Shedeur Sanders was the starting quarterback at Jackson State each of the past two seasons. He totaled 6,963 yards, 70 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in that time and was named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2022. The Tigers finished with a 23-3 record over those two years and won their conference championship both seasons.

Now as he arrives in Boulder, Shedeur Sanders will aim to carry that success with him over into the FBS. He brings with him his top receiver from Jackson State, Travis Hunter, as the Buffs aim to rebuild coming off an abysmal 1-11 season.

The roster looks almost completely different from last season as Hunter and Shedeur Sanders were just two of 49 transfers Colorado brought in. The Buffaloes also lost 57 players to the portal and come in at No. 2 according to On3’s Transfer Portal Rankings.

Colorado is set to kick off the 2023 season on Sept. 2 against defending national runner up TCU in a game that is sure to draw plenty of eyeballs.
