Urban Meyer Weighs in on the Impact of Travis Hunter to Colorado Football

Early in the Colorado Buffaloes‘ win over the Colorado State Rams, star two-way player Travis Hunter was injured on a late hit. It turned out to be a lacerated liver that has forced him to miss time. Since then, Deion Sanders has needed to find a way to move forward without him.

At some point, Hunter will be back for Colorado and that’s going to have an impact on Sanders’ team. During Urban’s Take with Tim May, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer shared how Hunter’s return could impact the Buffaloes.

“It helps more than a little, but they’re going to be very cautious,” Urban Meyer said. “You’re not talking about a sprained ankle here, you’re talking about an internal injury.

“I’ll know more when I get there actually today, but it’s gonna help a little and I made this comment after I left when I watched them practice, this is gonna be a really good team, and I said, ‘You know what a really good team is, they’re winning half their games.'”

Colorado started the season 3-0 before dropping a conference game against Oregon. There was a lot of hype and excitement around the program that partially came from how surprising that start was after going 1-11 last season.

Urban Meyer expected Colorado to be better this season. However, some of the excitement that came for the program was overblown when going .500 would be an incredibly successful season.

“I think they shocked the world a little bit,” Meyer said. “Didn’t shock me, but they shocked the world a little bit early on. And everybody was talking about national championship contender, Pac-12 — they’re not. Coach Prime said that. They’re not there yet, but they’re marked so much better than a year ago.”

Next up for Oregon is another big challenge. The Buffaloes are hosting USC on Saturday.

Deion Sanders mirrors the traits of Urban Meyer, Dabo Swinney

In his first season as an FBS head coach, Deion Sanders has been very impressive. Now, he’s even garnered a comparison to Urban Meyer and Dabo Swinney from On3’s Andy Staples.

“Here’s the thing about Deion, and this is the part I don’t think the haters of Deion get, Deion is one of the few people who is that level of former player who is willing to do the things you have to do and work the way you have to work to be a good college head coach. He’s good at talent acquisition, he’s good at motivation, and he’s good at organization/hiring assistants. Do you know who I just described? Urban Meyer and Dabo Swinney,” Staples said.

“Urban Meyer and Dabo Swinney, neither of whom were primary playcallers at any stretch before they became head coaches and won national titles because they’re great at getting good players, great at motivating them, and they’re great at hiring assistants.”
