Duke never trailed and led by as many as 31 points during the Blue Devils’ 84-55 win over Miami on the road.

Led by big men Mark Mitchell and Kyle Filipowski, the Blue Devils controlled the paint and won the rebounding margin 42-31 en route to Duke’s 12th conference win of the season, tied for the most in the ACC. Head coach Jon Scheyer cited the two bigs as major factors for the win during his postgame press conference.

“They’ve been terrific rebounding the ball,” Scheyer said. “I thought we had a few plays where we were just right there and we just couldn’t come up with them, but the effort was great. I think if you look at our rebounding numbers both ways in the last 10-12 games or so, it’s much different than the beginning of the year. That’s been a big strength for us.”

While both Filipowski and Mitchell only combined for 11 boards on the day, they also scored 15 points apiece, partly contributing to the Blue Devils’ 30 total points in the paint. Continuing the trend of identical statistics, both men were 5-of-7 from the floor — and both contributed from deep. Mitchell nailed his only attempt from 3, while Filipowski knocked down 2-of-3.

“I thought it was one of [Kyle] Filipowski’s best games,” Scheyer continued. “It’s not going to show in the box score, but he played with great poise. He was really strong. He played great defense. He makes the game so much easier for everybody else on the floor.”

Three guards also scored in double figures for Scheyer’s squad. Starters Caleb Foster and Jeremy Roach combined for seven 3-pointers during the matchup, while Tyrese Proctor earned 23 minutes off the bench and knocked down two deep balls of his own. The trio combined for nine of the 13 treys Duke made on Wednesday.

Now, the Blue Devils move to Winston-Salem on Saturday for the third game of Duke’s three-game road trip.

“We want to be at our best in February and March, and I think we’re on an upswing,” he said. “I think we’ve continued to get better. I think these guys have shown incredible toughness … whether it be setbacks, whether it be losses, they’ve just kept working, kept believing, and we need to continue to do that.”

Saturday’s opening tip between Duke and Wake Forest is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET and will air live on ESPN.
