The Duke Blue Devils took care of business on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and got past the Ohio State Buckeyes, 81-72. They took care of business despite their star point guard, Jeremy Roach, dealing with a right foot injury he suffered against the Purdue Boilermakers on Nov. 27. Following the Blue Devils’ win, head coach Jon Scheyer praised his star point guard’s ability to play through the pain.

Jon Scheyer praised Jeremy Roach’s toughness

“Yeah, Jeremy has done a great job. He’s one of those guys, I knew if there was a chance for him to play, he was gonna play. And he didn’t practice the last two days. He just got treatment. Steph did a great job of just taking care of him and getting him ready. And actually a couple of times, he got stepped on. You know [dealing with] a jammed toe can be a tough thing,” Scheyer said.

Despite not practicing the past few days, Roach still stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, five assists, and three rebounds in 33 minutes of work on Wednesday night. Scheyer was very impressed with the performance from the former Paul VI Catholic (Fairfax, Virginia) product.

“But just his willingness to drive in the game. I thought he just had a great command. As good as I’ve seen from him. So, he stepped up big time as a leader. I thought he showed what his character was all about. I think he’ll build from this,” Scheyer said.

Duke did an excellent job of sharing the basketball, dishing out 16 assists in their win against Ohio State. The Blue Devils also shot better than the Buckeyes from beyond-the-arc, 38.5% to 23.1%. Freshman center Kyle Filipowski stuffed the stat sheet yet again for Duke with 16 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
