Like many of the players on Duke’s roster, Sean Stewart was one of the most highly touted prospects in the nation coming out of high school. A former McDonald’s All-American in the 2023 cycle, Stewart was highly coveted. On Wednesday night against Notre Dame, the star power forward showed why. Stewart blocked a shot at one end, ran the floor, and went up for a nasty alley-oop.

Stewart finished with four points, five rebounds, three steals, and one block. He’s been averaging 7.5 minutes per game on a loaded Blue Devils roster as a freshman. But clearly, with plays like the one above, the future is bright for Stewart and his athleticism.

The Blue Devils were simply too much to handle for the Fighting Irish on Wednesday evening. While Notre Dame tried to battle back at one point, Duke led by double digits for much of the game, closing it out in Cameron Indoor in comfortable fashion, 71-53.

The Blue Devils had three players in double figures and surprisingly one of them was not Kyle Filipowksi. The stud sophomore did stuff the stat sheet with eight points and nine rebounds. The three players that put in double figures were Jared McCain (11 points), Mark Mitchell (13 points), and Caleb Foster (13 points).

Duke had 10 steals, while also holding Notre Dame to just 7 of 27 (25.9%) from beyond-the-arc. Freshman phenom Markus Burton led the Fighting Irish with 19 points. His speed and quickness make him one of the toughest guards in America to defend. In his first year, he’s been averaging 16.0 points, 4.0 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game.

With the win, Duke improved to 17-5 overall and 8-3 in the ACC. Notre Dame dropped to 7-16 overall and 2-10 in the ACC.

Sean Stewart impressed in 2023 McDonald’s All-American Game

Following the 2023 McDonald’s All-American Game, On3’s Jamie Shaw had this to say about the former Montverde High star. “Sean Stewart thrives around the basket, hustle plays, rebounds, and finishes above the rim. He won the McDonald’s All-American dunk contest, but he also showed some interesting developments in his game. Stewart knocked down a dribble pull-up in the game, and he attacked the rim in the half-court.”

Stewart attended one of the nation’s powerhouse high school basketball programs, Montverde Academy (Orlando, Florida). In the 2023 cycle, he was rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 17 overall player in the nation, according to the On3 Industry Rankings.
