Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland five-star defensive lineman and Florida commit LJ McCray has signed with the Gators.

McCray committed to Florida on Oct. 21, choosing the Gators over FSU, Auburn and others.

“I have great relationships with Coach Napier and my position coaches, and I feel like they can put me in a position where I want to go,” McCray told On3 upon his commitment.

Florida recently fired defensive line coach Sean Spencer, but McCray told Gators Online’s Corey Bender earlier this month that he was still “one-hundred” percent committed to the Gators.

“Of course, it definitely caught me by surprise,” McCray said of Spencer’s dismissal. “Nobody wants to hear that type of news, especially since that’s my guy … It was definitely a crazy feeling for sure.”

Despite that, the Gators were able to hold on to one of their biggest commitments in recent memory despite strong pushes from Florida State and Auburn.

McCray is the No. 23 overall recruit in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 4 defensive lineman and the No. 6 recruit in Florida.

On3 is higher on him than other recruiting services, tabbing him as the No. 3 overall recruit and No. 1 defensive lineman in the 2024 cycle.
