Things got bad enough for Florida under Dan Mullen that the program felt the need to make a move with the 2021 season still going on. Greg Knox finished out as the interim coach before landing on Lousiana’s Billy Napier to be the school’s next head football coach. And while a competitive snap has not been played yet, players are already seeing a major difference in Napier compared to Mullen.

Gators defensive lineman Gervon Dexter had the opportunity to speak to the media, where he was asked where the two staffs have differed thus far. He said discipline has been a huge point of emphasis under Napier and the program has been able to build a family-type atmosphere.

“Like I said, discipline,” Dexter said. “Huge, huge discipline. Just, you’re going to see a family out there. It won’t be an individual, this, or that. It will be all the guys going the same way. That will be the biggest thing out there.”

Dexter even gave an example, using something as simple as wearing the correct socks to practice on a daily basis. He thinks the entire team is doing a better job of listening to their head coach.

“At first, it was some new stuff but it’s been a whole switch,” said Dexter. “As far as everything we do. As Coach Napier said, we all outside in white socks, you won’t see a blue sock out there. That’s been the main thing. Just being more disciplined, doing what he says, and that’s been a huge change in the switch so far.”

This will be the third season for Dexter in Gainesville. He entered the program with Mullen as the head coach before the 2020 season. As a freshman, he got off to a great start and was potentially heading toward a College Football Playoff appearance. However, it all unraveled during the LSU game and since then, the Gators have had a 6-10 record since.

Now, Dexter, who is a former Five-Star Plus+ and a top 10 prospect, seems to be 100% bought into the program Napier and his staff is building. It’s only been a few months since Mullen was running the program but the culture change has already taken a massive swing.

Dexter and his teammates will have the opportunity to finally play for Napier on Sept. 3, with a tough home game against Utah.
