Even with two games remaining, Florida has lost a wide receiver to the transfer portal. Trent Whittemore announced he will be leaving Gainesville in the midst of his fourth season with the program. He was recruited by former head coach Dan Mullen and has not been able to make it work under Billy Napier in Year One.

Not everybody seems too terribly upset Whittemore is heading out of Florida, though. One of his former teammates and fellow wide receiver Rick Wells took to Twitter to call out Whittemore. He said there will be some actual competition for Whittemore moving forward and that “coach relationship” doesn’t matter anymore.

“You gotta really compete now! Daddy and coach relationship don’t matter no more,” Wells said.

Wells and Whittemore were teammates over the course of three seasons, beginning in the 2019 season. Billy Gonzales, who is now with Florida Atlantic, was the wide receiver coach at the time. According to Wells, his counterpart was getting favored by Gonzales.

Whittemore played in six games this year without Wells on the roster, having just four catches for 87 yards. There seems to be some kind of beef between the two and now, Wells wants to take a victory lap after the other entering the transfer portal.

Florida has bounced back nicely following a loss to Georgia and the dismissal of star pass-rusher Brenton Cox, winning two straight to earn bowl eligibility. But the attrition for the Gators is likely to continue over the coming weeks and, on Monday evening, receiver Trent Whittemore announced he’s entered the transfer portal.

Whittemore announced the news on his Twitter account, tweeting a graphic.

“I’ve been a Gator for as long as I can remember. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have played for the University of Florida and earned my degree,” Whittemore wrote. “Thanks to Coach (Jim) McElwain, Coach (Dan) Mullen, and Coach (Billy) Napier for their parts in my journey. A special thanks to Coach (Billy) Gonzales, Coach [Keary Colbert], and Coach (Nick) Savage for all they poured into me. Most of all I appreciate the relationships built and time spent with my teammates. It’s the friendships and memories that I will treasure most.

“With that being said, I have now entered the transfer portal as a graduate student.”

Whittemore battled injuries during his time at Florida, including a punctured lung at one point.
