Cris Carter predicts that former NFL great and Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders, AKA Coach Prime will return to his alma mater to be the next Florida State head coach.

“I love what Prime (Deion Sanders) is about,” Carter told Patrick Peterson and Bryant McFadden on the Sept. 23 edition of their All Things Covered podcast. “I’ve been knowing him since right out of high school, Florida State. All the marketing, that’s a smart guy. People don’t give Prime credit and I’m getting ready to jump on the bandwagon, B. Deion going to be the coach at Florida State. That’s what going to happen. Alright, just give it a little time to percolate,”

He then mentioned Florida State’s 0-3 record (at the time) before continuing.

“In the next three years, there’s nothing that would make the great late Bobby Bowden happier than one of the guys he mentored to go get that program back,” Carter said. “If Prime is at Florida State, I don’t wanna be nowhere within a six-hour ride recruiting against him.”

Deion Sanders is in his second season, and his first fall season, at Jackson State. Sanders has led Jackson State to a 7-4 record and helped the Tigers reel in the highest-rated recruiting class in FCS and HBCU history in the 2021 cycle.

Mike Norvell is currently in his second season as head coach at Florida State. After a 38-15 record in four seasons as the head coach at Memphis, Norvell’s tenure at Florida State has gotten off to a rough start. After going 3-6 in his first season with the Seminoles, Florida State is off to its worst start in program history in 2021 with a 0-4 record.

Still not two full seasons into his tenure much has been made about Norvell’s job security and the outlook for the Seminoles program as a whole, leading Sanders’ name to be brought up in discussion as the next head coach for the storied program.

Before his legendary NFL career, Deion Sanders starred as a punt returner and defensive back for Bobby Bowden at Florida State from 1985-1988, while also playing baseball and track for the Seminoles.

In four seasons, Sanders returned 126 punts for 1,429 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Sanders had 14 interceptions. Sanders finished his college career as a two-time consensus All-American, won the Jim Thorpe Award in 1988 and had his #2 jersey retired. He went on to play 14 seasons in the NFL as well as nine seasons in the MLB.

Sanders is considered one of the greatest athletes of all time and is in the conversation as best cornerback of all time. In his NFL career, Sanders won two Super Bowls, made eight Pro Bowls, was a six-time first-team All-Pro at cornerback, one time first-team All-Pro punt returner and one time first-team All-Pro kick returner. Sanders was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

Deion Sanders has stated in the past he is dedicated to bringing attention to HBCUs and is locked in on his current position leading Jackson State, where two of his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, currently play.

“I’m so dern tunnel vision and focused and locked in on what we’re trying to accomplish here at Jackson State,” Deion Sanders said via HBCU Gameday. “That’s who I am, that’s what I am, that’s how I get down. That’s how I’ve been successful, being able to lock-in — focus on what’s at hand.”
