Mike Norvell previews the potential role for receiver Deuce Spann

Florida State is looking forward to a veteran and improved passing game in 2022. Part of that improvement will come from the wide receiver position, where Mike Norvell’s staff locked down a young transfer they think could have a considerable impact at FSU.

Illinois WR Deuce Spann hadn’t hit it huge yet in just one year on the field with the Illini, but his athleticism is obvious on tape. Now, heading into his third year, perhaps Spann is ready to take the step from promising underclassmen to reliable veteran as he starts fresh at FSU in his third year of college.

Coach Norvell is already loving the transfer wideouts potential.

Mike Norvell on transfer WR Deuce Spann

“When you have size, speed and strength, all those are a good combination that help put you in a position to be successful,” Norvell said following the Seminoles’ first fall scrimmage. “To see him capitalize on that, making the tough catches down the field, being able to — when he got the ball in his hands on a short or intermediate play — see that explosiveness is encouraging. We continue to challenge him.”

At another press conference recently, Deuce Spann was brought up again. One reporter asked Norvell what kind of role he envisioned him having this season. Here was the head coach’s answer:

“Hopefully a big one. Like he is a very explosive player, you know. I think that, you know, it was good getting him out, you know. He’d kind of been limited a little bit here this last week. Today, he was full go. And I mean you saw him make some some of those — you know, some of those flash plays. You know, he’s continuing to grow and develop. I mean he’s only played the position for a little over a year, you know. I think the sky’s the limit for him as well. And, you know, I’m excited for Saturday to see, you know, how he’s going to be able to make an impact on the game. And, you know, just his future ahead.”

Sounds like Deuce Spann could be in line for a breakout. So long as he continues to learn how to play the position the right way.
