FSU RB Roydell Williams discusses transfer process, excitement under Norvell

Multiple waves of players transferred out of Alabama. Running back Roydell Williams left the program before Nick Saban retired, looking for a new home in what could be his final year of college football. Williams will spend the 2024 season with Florida State and head coach Mike Norvell.

Opportunity is the main word Williams used when answering why he decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal and ultimately land with the Seminoles. He believes there will be a chance to impress in Norvell and offensive coordinator Alex Atkins‘ system, who is hoping to retool after losing important pieces from last year’s 13-1 squad.

“Just the opportunity,” Williams said. “Everybody has an opportunity on the table. I was told to take the opportunity. Coach Norvell gave me the opportunity and I’m going to take advantage of it.”

Looking from a depth chart perspective, Williams would have been a member of a crowded running back room in Tuscaloosa. Jam Miller was ready to take on a bigger role while Justice Haynes is set to burst onto the scene as a sophomore. Williams would have, at the very best, shared carries once again for Alabama.

Florida State can provide Williams with more playing time. Trey Benson led the Seminoles in rushing last year with 906 yards and 14 touchdowns but is off to the NFL. Lawrance Toafili will return but should be part of a dynamic duo with Williams.

Now, the goal heading into spring practice is getting acclimated with the entire system. Whether it’s his teammates, the coaching staff, or the playbook, Williams is in a new environment for the first time in a while.

“It’s just a different feel,” Williams said. “Getting to know everybody again. Coach staff, a new field, a new playing style, and playbook. So, it takes some getting adjusted to but I’m thankful and blessed for the opportunity that Coach Norvell gave me.”

Williams spent four years with the Crimson Tide, taking a bigger role during the 2023 season. He rushed for 560 yards and five touchdowns on 111 carries — all of which were career highs. Jase McClellan was Alabama’s main back but Williams brought a different element to the run game when needed.

The goal is to put up better numbers with Florida State and carry on the success the program has had over the past few seasons. Williams is hoping to be a key piece during the 2024 season.
