Former Georgia linebacker Adam Anderson, who faced rape charges stemming from an October 2021 incident, was indicted and charged by a grand jury, according to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach. The decision came Tuesday afternoon, just two days ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Anderson had been training in south Florida and had a private workout for NFL scouts from 17 teams at a high school in Athens in March, according to ESPN.

Adam Anderson’s arraignment for the alleged rape is scheduled for June 13. His attorney took time after the decision to release a statement on the case as his client continues facing these charges.

“Adam respectfully reminds the public and his supporters that he was not permitted by law to participate in the grand jury proceeding, which is totally under the control of the prosecution,” Anderson’s attorney, Steve Sadow, said in a statement to ESPN. “This means his defense was not presented or argued to the grand jurors. Adam will plead not guilty to the charge and continue his fight in court to clear his name and reputation. Adam once again appeals to the good citizens of Athens-Clarke County to keep an open mind and not prejudge his case.”

The alleged rape, which is now set to go to trial, occurred during Georgia’s 2021 football season which ended in a national championship. Adam Anderson did not finish the season with the team.

According to police records, a 21-year old female told police she went to an Athens residence from 12 a.m. to 7 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, after having drinks. She allegedly awoke with Anderson penetrating her while lying in bed. Furthermore, she told police it was nonconsensual and she was able to leave.

She reported the incident at 2:39 p.m. the same day, when the department’s Criminal Investigations Division interviewed her.

The Georgia linebacker played against the Florida Gators in Jacksonville one day after the alleged rape. He finished the game with a season-high seven tackles, including one sack and three quarterback hits.

Georgia linebacker Adam Anderson voluntarily surrendered to the police after being formally charged with rape by Athens-Clarke County police. Anderson had been suspended by the team while under investigation and since left the team.

Just one month ago, Anderson’s attorney filed a motion to have his felony rape charge dismissed. That request was denied and now leads to a trial against the former NFL Draft prospect.
