Nine days after the single-vehicle crash that killed a Georgia football player and staffer and left two others injured, Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks released a statement on the incident itself and the investigation into it. Brooks stated that he had refrained from making any statements about the circumstances of the crash “out of respect for the families.”

Additionally, Brooks said in the statement that Georgia athletics is conducting a review of the crash “in coordination with appropriate legal counsel” to understand what happened. Until that review concludes — along with investigations from law enforcement — officials are likely to be mum on the matter. Willock, a third-year offensive lineman, and LeCroy, a recruiting staffer, were killed in the crash.

“Out of respect for the families involved, we have refrained from making any public statements up to this point regarding the circumstances of the tragic accident that claimed two lives and injured two members of our campus community. However, we want the public to know that the athletic department is conducting a thorough review, in coordination with appropriate legal counsel, to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. We want to emphasize that these individuals were not engaged in athletic department duties around the time of this incident,” Brooks said in the statement, shared on Twitter by Georgia athletics.

The statement continued, noting that Brooks is working with football coach Kirby Smart to make sure football program policies are in-line with any findings of the review, as well.

“Our review is preliminary at this time, and the athletic department is fully cooperating with law enforcement officials to determine all the facts surrounding this tragedy. Coach Smart and I are also actively review relevant football policies, and at the conclusion of that review, we will take steps to implement any improvements in our policies and procedures that may be needed,” Brooks said. “Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the families and friends of all those impact by this tragic event.”
