Kirby Smart shares unfortunate news on Branson Robinson, explains where Georgia RB room is at

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart shared health updates on a number of players on Wednesday, including that running back Branson Robinson is out for the season with a torn patellar tendon. But a number of other Bulldogs are dealing with various injuries.

Outside of Robinson, freshman linebacker Raylen Wilson and redshirt freshman offensive lineman Earnest Greene are working their way back.

“Earnest was able to go yesterday some of the time, he’s dealing with a little bit of an ankle sprain but he worked out and ran Monday and he practice probably about 50 percent of the reps yesterday, so we think he’s going to be OK. Raylen’s still dealing with a hyperextended knee. Branson had a significant injury yesterday,” Smart said.

“He had a non-contact ruptured patellar tendon, so he will be out for the season. Tough, tough break for him. He was coming back from a toe injury on the other leg and he actually was not even in a contact drill. He cut and planted and ruptured the patellar tendon. So, unfortunately — he’ll get a full recovery, but he’ll be out for the season.”

With Robinson sidelined, Georgia will rely on sophomore Daijun Edwards and senior Kendall Milton, among others, to carry the ball. Milton, though, is working back from an injury himself. However, Smart shared on Wednesday that he seems to be getting back up to speed, albeit not quite at full speed yet.

“Puts us in a tough situation at back. Kendall’s still — Kendall’s actually taking some more reps. He’s been able to do some things. But he’s not 100 percent. And Andrew [Paul] is getting a ton of reps. Rod Robinson is getting a ton of reps. Cash [Jones] is getting a lot of work. So, it’ll be done by committee like it always has been here,” Smart said.

Mostly, though, the head coach is upset about the injury to Robinson and how it’ll cost him after so much work to get back from turf toe in the spring. The running back had looked great throughout the summer and was poised to play a major role for the Bulldogs.

“I hate it for Branson because he had really worked hard. At the end of the spring when he had the turf toe, he was battling back all offseason. He’s had a great summer and looked really good in the days leading up to this injury,” Smart said.
