Georgia Tech QB Jeff Sims is 'day-to-day' ahead of Florida State game

With Georgia Tech set to play Florida State this weekend, the health of Yellow Jacket QB Jeff Sims remains a question mark. He left during the second quarter of Tech’s 16-9 loss to Virginia a week ago with an injury and Tech had to send in Zach Gibson to play the remainder of the game. Based on the update from interim head coach Brent Key, it sounds like the team will likely be relying on a backup on Saturday in Tallahassee.

During his press conference earlier this week, Key labeled Sims as ‘day-to-day’ with a sprained foot. An MRI came back clean but, with no changes to his status since, the sense that Gibson or one of Tech’s other QBs will be starting only grows.

“(Sims) sprained his foot in the game. It has nothing to do with what kept him out of the last two plays of the last game. The game prior to that it was something different,” said Hey. “Had an MRI, everything checked out fine with it, and he’s day to day moving forward.”

Sims has completed 58.5% of his passes for 1,115 yards and five touchdowns along with 302 rushing yards for another score during his seven games this season. He had led Tech to a 3-3 record in his three full games but whether he’ll be adding to those stats this weekend remains to be seen.

If not, the likely starter may once again be Gibson. He went on to complete just 10 of his 25 pass attempts for 99 yards. Key may also consider freshman Zach Pyron for the job on Saturday.

Missing their starting QB for a road game against a desperate Seminole team isn’t ideal for a Tech squad that had picked up some momentum in October. Even with Sims not officially out, though, the program will have to prepare as though he won’t be available this weekend with kickoff just two days away.
