Caitlin Clark just keeps making history. The Iowa star is looking to repeat as National Player of the Year, and she’s moving up the NCAA’s all-time scoring list.

During Wednesday’s game against Northwestern, Clark scored the 3,394th point of her storied career, which moved her past Missouri State legend Jackie Stiles for third all-time. Then, with her 14th point of the night, she overtook Ohio State great Kelsey Mitchell for No. 2 all-time with her 3,403rd career point.

That means Clark now only trails Washington icon Kelsey Plum as the top scorer in women’s basketball history. She also holds sole possession of the top spot in Big Ten history.

After winning Player of the Year last year and helping lead Iowa to the national championship, Clark is putting together even better numbers in 2023-24. She entered Wednesday’s game averaging 31.7 points per game, which would be the highest average of her career if she stays on that pace. She’s also adding 7.0 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game as she does it all for the Iowa offense.

Last time out against Nebraska, Clark looked like she had a chance to overtake Stiles. After scoring just 10 points in the first half, she stormed back to drop 28 after halftime to finish with 38 on the night as Iowa came away with the 92-73 victory. That left her just four points shy of moving up to third all-time, giving her a strong chance to achieve that milestone against Northwestern.

Caitlin Clark: The all-time scoring record is ‘not something I’m after’

As she moves up the NCAA’s all-time scoring list, Clark made it clear she’s focusing on the task at hand. While she noted Stiles’ standing among the all-time greats in women’s basketball, she’s soaking up every bit of this season as she prepares to — more than likely — declare for the WNBA Draft.

“She’s one of the best to ever pick up a basketball, so that’s super cool,” Clark said after the Nebraska game. “I couldn’t tell you how close I am or whatnot. … It’s not something I’m after. I just keep playing the game, keep having fun, and this is kind of what just comes along with it. I’m just trying to enjoy every single second.

“We’re down to nine regular-season games left, and that’s hard for me to wrap my head around because the season just goes so fast. I’m just trying to enjoy every single second with my team.”

Clark will have eight more games left to try to top Mitchell and Plum on the all-time list during the regular season. In fact, she could have a chance at catching legendary LSU guard Pete Maravich to score the most points in college basketball history — both men’s and women’s.
